Great initiative Rex. Keep it up.
I am sure you will take it in the right spirit if I make some observations/addition to this list. You know, 1983-1985 period is very close to my heart.
1985 vareyulla cinemakalile chila shraddeya veshanghalanu Rex mukalil kurichittullathu. It's a good selection. No issues with that. But there are certain massive omissions!! I am happy that you have discussed Yathra, if not I would have been terribly disappointed.
Similarly, you have mentioned Koodevide and Captain Thomas as a footnote. So that too is fine.
1983-1985 vareyulla Mammootty yude mikacha prakadananghal charcha cheyyumpol orikkalum ozhivaakkanakatha chila kadhapaathranghal undu.
1. Koodevide - September 1983 - Captain Thomas - Probably Mammootty's best performance in his first 3 years as an actor (period from 1980-1983). Even after 33 years, the performance stands out. "Njhane....Kanjhirappallikkaran Christianiya......." ennu thudanghunna dialogue um prakadanavum mathram mathi aa kadhapathram ennum nammude manassil jeevikkan.
Koodevide and Captain Thomas showed the cinema fraternity, the class and the mass what was in store in years to come.
2. Aksharanghal - March 1984 - Jayadevan - The movie in which Mammootty looked the towering Bharath Gopi in the eye. It was a treat to watch these two great actors facing each other. Fantastic performance from Mammootty in a very difficult role at a very early part of his career. Aksharanghalile Jayadevan Mammootty yude adyakala cinema jeevithathile oru nazhikakkallanu.
3. Aalkkoottathil Thaniye - June 1984 - Rajan - One of the most underrated performances of Mammootty. Actually he has acted his heart out as Rajan in the movie. Again , a very difficult role , as he would not get the viewers sympathy at all. Kuttappeduthalukalkkum, veerppumuttalukalkkum naduvil onnu thurannu chirikkano manassu panku veykkano illathe vishamikkunna Rajan asamanya prakadanam thanneyayirunnu.
4. Kanamarayathu - July 1984 - Roy Varghese (Royichan) - Suite ittu Office il irikkunnu, Car odikkunnu ennathu kondu Royichan oru kutti petti kadhapathram onnumakunnilla. No way.
Just go through similar characters done by many of the fine actors of Malayalam before and after Kanamarayathu. You will find that Royichan is a one off... Royichan oru Padmarajan kadhapathramanu. Mammootty just got under the skin of that character with such ease and elan.
5. Adiyozhukkukal – December 1984 – Thonikkaran Karunan – When Adiyozhukkukal released, Keralam stopped talking about who’s the successor of Sathyan. Outstanding performance from Mammootty which won him the State award for Best Actor. Even today, if you watch it, you won’t feel out of place. That is the charecteristic feature of all great performances of Mammootty. It is universal and transcends time.
6. Anubandham – April 1985 – Muraleedharan Master – A performance that can be rightfully called as a ‘Text book of acting’. A kind of performance that other than Mammootty, only Bharath Gopi and Thilakan could pull off. Mammoottykku 32-33 vayassullappolanu aa kadhapathrathe athrayum mikavodu koodi addeham avatharippichathu. Asamanyamaya mithathwam kadhapathrathiludaneelam namukku kanan kazhiyum. A kind of dexterity that is unmatched.
7. Yathra – September 1985 -Unnikrishnan - A poetry in motion…..of course you have discussed it. So I won't tell anything more about Unnikrishnan who will remain in our hearts forever.

"If the ball is a crying toddler, then Andres Iniesta's first touch is a lullaby..."
Thanks @Devarajan Master for your feedback and I would be taking this in right spirit. These are the great list of movies you have written.
I wanted to add to so many movies in the list but as I said, by the time I complete the series of Legendary actors I want to have best 20- 25 characters of each superstars according to me. If we take the performance I would have to take atleast 50% of each of their roles. Also I picked some of the movies that made some difference to the career.
Aksharangal, Aalkoottathil Thaniye are some of the great performances of Mammootty during that era, no two ways about it. If I compare these 2 movies I would rate Aksharangal a bit higher because of identity of characters. Eventhough both are penned by M.T Sir.
Anubandham and Adiyozhukkukal I want to include in a different write up where Mammootty and Mohanlal came together.
Kaanamarayathu I already replied to Thevalliparamban. It could be the time I watched the movie by the time he had done New Delhi, Thaniyavarthanam etc..
P.S On a lighter note there is dialogue from Seema in Aalkoottathil Thaniye "Enikku pirakkatha poya makana".

Angamaly Diaries: A hot tasty 10 ml soul of Angamaly.
This friday movie released in US. Went to watch this Lijo Jose pellissery movie that day itself.
I dont have words to describe this movie. Its simply awesome. I was really bowled over by Lijo and the new comers.
In last couple of years we have seen wonderful movies coming out.
For me this is one of the well directed movie par/above with Maheshinte Prathikaram.
Story:(Some spoilers) A teenager Vincent Pepe idolizes a local tough guy Babuji and want to become like him.
In the process he befriends many teenagers and forms 'palliangadyTeam'. Babuji was killed by two youngsters Ravi and Rajan.
Years pass, they grew. Palliyangadi Team have Varkey, 2 Martys, Bheeman, 10 ml Thomas and later Kunjootti.
Palliangady Team Starts Pork Business where they initially buys from Appani Ravi and U-Clamp Rajan who were doing wholesale.
Later Pepe and gang starts wholesale which starts friction. During the course Pepe accidentally kills friend of Ravi's brother in law.
What happens later is the story. In between Pepe have some romances too.
Screenplay: Great screenplay which complimented Lijo's direction. Chemban has done an amazing Job.
Each characters have their own identity and essentially captured the essence of Angamaly throughout.
I felt this is one rare screenplay where everyones action is justified.
All the characters are very much intertwined. Couldn't find out any unnecessary scenes and screenplay made it very racy.
Direction: Outstanding. Lijo has already proved his mettle. But this will be one of the finest directed movie above City of God, Amen.
His versatility has been shown in all his movies. His narration was so racy that I find it difficult to say this was more than 2 hrs.
The 13 minute uncut thrilling climax is a golden feather in his cap. Also we need to take into account that he shot this movie with 86 newbies.
Acting: Beyond words. All actors where so convincing that I never felt they were acting.
Sarath Kumar who essayed Appani Ravi reminded me of Manikandan's performance as Balan chettan in Kammattipadam.
Other actors who blew my mind were Bitto Davis who portrayed 10 ml Thomas, Sinoj Varghese donned Kunjootti and
Kichu Tellus as Varkey. A minor glitch I found was Reshma Rajan's lip synch was out of place in couple of occasion but she did her role perfectly.
My Opinion: An outstanding experience.
P.S : Next day I had pork varattiyathu at home![]()
