I think what's happening is that christianity as an organized religion is declining. It's becoming more like hinduism. It is becoming just a school of thought or way of life.

According to a 2014 survey, 70.6% of adults in the United States identified themselves as Christians. But there is a decline in people who are affiliating to a specific denomination like Catholic, Protestants etc. That is causing many churches being empty and being sold. But that doesn't mean christianity is becoming irrelevant in the West. It's just that it's becoming more personal.

there was this bollywood directors roundtable conducted by anupama chopra. one of the later questions asked by mrs chopra was, what is a change you would like to see in the industry. most of the directors blah-blahed about the usual bullshit. the only voice that differed was that of shoojit sircar, who said, he would like bollywood attain the freedom to use names of real-life people when taking on controversial subjects. out in hollywood, there are lots of movies that take on POTUS like nixon, bush etc., corporates like 3M and DuPont etc... over here, we blanket such under a fictional name and then have to spend 3-4 scenes to make the audience realise whom/what we are referring to...

vulnerable in two ways. first are those that face difficulties (topmost being financial followed by medical ailments and last, lack of a job). the established churches do little to go out and help such members. that is where independent groups or churches barge into the household, on a daily basis; their only goal being, add more members to their church. the second is, those who feel they need to know the bible more. they feel priests, preachers or evangelists of established churches are not proficient enough about what the scripture is. they tend to believe understanding the bible is the key to afterlife. to a large extent, it is true that pentecostal/independent pastors know by heart more verses from the bible and the right occasion to use it, than priests who have completed 3 year course in theology. in short, either the pleasure to seek more meaning in the scripture or the inability to face the pain of an ailment, one of these will make them fall astray. both of these have been taken up in the movie.
