Ranam::Detroit Crossing - "An Average Thriller With Pretty Impressive Last 45 minutes"

__________
Nirmal Sahadev who has earlier worked as an assistant to noted director Shyamaprasad and co-written the screenplay for recently released Nivin Pauly starrer 'Hey Jude' has made his directorial debut with "Ranam",an emotional gangster drama set against the backdrop of gang-wars in the notorious American city of Detroit.Heavily backed by top notch lead performances,a riveting background score and splendid visuals,Ranam has managed to provide a satisfactory cinematic experience despite a loose screenplay and at times sluggish narrative.
The narrative took a lot of time to establish its characters and the first half lacked the necessary pace that the storyline demanded,so as to cater to the major section of the movie going audience in mollywood. The making reminded me of yesteryear Mexican and Spanish gansgter thrillers and the second half in particular was concieved pretty well by Nirmal who has showcased glimpse of his mettle in handling dark shaded thrillers.
The best thing about the movie is its last 40-45 minutes which has been shot exceptionally well and blessed with brilliant acts, cleverly written dialogues and brilliant musical score.Had the first half been equally good as the second, the movie could have gained much better response from the general mass masala movie lovers in Mollywood.
The backbone of the movie is its male lead performers,Prithviraj Sukumaran and Rashin Rahman who have given top notch performances that lifted the movie whenever the narrative suffered from its lethargic pace, especially during the pre-intermission session. The lead character Adhi was safe in the hands of Prithviraj who portrayed the emotionally demanding role with much needed perfection.Rahman gave a stellar act as antagonist Damodar Ratnam who has the best one-liners in the movie. The movie acts as a testimony for the versatility of this talented actor who is still under-utilzed by Mollywood film-makers.Other notable performers were Nandhu and Giju John who excelled with their realistic acts.Isha Talwar was adequate, but at times suffered with her dialogue delivery.
Frames by Jigme Temzing were pretty impressive and the color tone used was perfect for the whole setting of the movie.Realistic action blocks and art direction complimented the narrative big-time.A highly effective background score by Jakes Bejoy deserves a special mention. The placing of songs could have been taken care of to tune the continuity of the narrative.Edits by Sreejith Sarang could have been better.
Overall,'Ranam' is a decent dark-shaded emotional gangster thriller that's nevertheless worth a one time watch from the cinemas nearby.
