As #2018Movie goes on a record breaking spree worldwide, per Comscore reports, Canada has done only about 100K. The distributor claims to have released in 25+ centres but only 10 odd locations are in Comscore. Pathetic! Major theatres in Ontario which accounts for 80% of the canadian BO revenue, are not in Comscore.
This kind of under reporting by unscrupulous operators affects the whole industry especially in overseas markets where we have to fight with the Telugu and Tamil movies for the limited screens made available to non-Hollywood movies.
When the numbers are not reported into
@Comscore
, film buyers at chains like
@CineplexMovies
and
@LandmarkCinemas
do not realize the potential of Malayalam movies. In a market like UK where an average hit movie in Malayalam does 300K with about 60-100 centres, @
cineworld
and
@ODEONCinemas
opening them widely in 150+ centres in the second week, has now pushed the boundary to 700K. With such numbers, Malayalam movies can compete with Tamil and Telugu movies for screens in the UK. This opportunity has been sadly lost for Malayalam movies in Canada.
Giving movies to unscrupulous operators in Canada for the past decade or so has meant that industry hits like Lucifer & #2018Movie are not officially reported into Comscore and hence our industrys potential is unknown to the exhibitors here.
Sincere requests to producers and major overseas distributors, to please not provide movies to such unscrupulous operators in Canada or anywhere for that matter!
