May be the fans in us might be stopping us from appreciating the actor or giving the credit where it is due.
A Superstar in old convection can be defined as someone irrespective of the genre or type of movie he is in, the fate of previous movies, is able to get an opening, sustain the collections and carry the financials of the movie to a safe post, irrespective of the word of mouth of the movie. In such sense, only Vijay, Ajith, Rajinikanth and Salman Khan (to some extend) can be classified as True superstars in current time.
Neither Mohanlal, Mammooty or anyone else in our Industry can drive the movie to Theatrical success based on their Name alone. Such level of fanism is non-existent in Kerala right now, whereas it still exists in Tamilnadu.
But what Mohanlal has up his sleeves are different. He has retained his existing fan base (hence the opening of movies which generate hype) and increased his family support many fold post Drishyam. Hence the Mileage of his positive WOM movies at box-office is higher than anyone in our Industry right now.
In case of Mammooty, there are contemplation and speculations that "if" his movie get the WOM that Mohanlal movies got, then he also can achieve the level of box-office collections that Mohanlal has. Since Mammooty has given a huge hit in Pazhassi raja which might be the last movie which got unanimous WOM (not counting Unda - mostly critical reception and offbeat movie) and the box-office collection was huge, this argument cannot be ruled out. Even when Mammooty has retained his fan base over these years, he has lost some of the family backing (which he can regain in span of few good movies without any "parippuvada" in between). But currently most of his current successes are fan-driven (madhuraraja, abraham, TGF etc) and some string of duds in between which takes away the momentum.
So contemplations and speculations aside, one "fact" is that the Mileage Mohanlal gives to positive WOM movies is huge “Currently”. Unless Mammooty get a huge hit in leagues of Dhrishyam, PuMu or Lucifer, there is no parity on discussion here.
Pinne, "Acting", let us not get into a fan fight just for fighting.
