Again the discussion is why Malayalam movie industry is unable to have pan Indian appeal , when it comes to box office. We were miles ahead of Kannada a few years back, now things got changed. We are still talking about the 30-40 crore local hits, whereas other South Indian languages established good pan Indian market. Even an average movie like Karthikeya 2 got huge collections from North India, whereas we didn't even try to do that. Malayalam movies are restricted to a few multiplexes outside Kerala.
The second point is Malayalis acceptance to the non-Malayalam movies. When it comes to Malayalam movies, we have a very different standard. We are more critical on our movies. Industries like Kannada are getting good support from their Government (tax breaks), media and ordinary people (affinity to their language). Many theaters in Kerala border towns hardly show any Malayalam movies.
These are facts and we can not ignore that. We can not live in the past. Need to be more creative in terms of content, marketing and promotion. Also our Government can do a lot more to promote our language movies.
