    2006- Hits & Misses!

    By Moviebuzz | Friday, 29 December , 2006, 13:40

Tamil film industry is on a bull run, as 98 films were released and nearly 25 films were profitable. Remember that last year only a dozen films made money out of 90 odd films!

The boom is attributed to the audience coming back to the theatres and youth patronising movies with new concepts and new heroes. Karunanidhi government’s decision to exempt films with Tamil titles from entertainment tax also boosted ticket sales. The usual formulaic film with six songs, five fights and a larger-than-life hero plus a lot of glamour seems to be outdated this year.

Tamil cinema became more popular in neighbouring states of Karnataka and Kerala and had a huge dubbing potential in Andhra. And after Bollywood, Kollywood is the second most popular export earner among Indian films. Today there is great demand for Tamil films worldwide, mainly due to Sri Lankan Tamils.

The message emanating from Kodambakkam tinsel town is loud and clear: Story and presentation is more important than making movies to boost a superstar’s inflated ego. And the audience was not willing to take what was thrust upon them. Hardwork, discipline and innovative ideas paid rich dividends at the box-office. Small films like Chithirem Pesuthadi, Kokki, Thalainagaram, Parijatham, Dishoom and Thiruttu Payale that distributors were initially reluctant to touch turned out to be gold. Thambi, Perarasu, Em Magan, Pattiyal, E and the latest film Tiruvilayadal Arambham were also money grossers.

Films with newness in presentation were welcomed by the audience while a few films with superstars and big hype failed miserably. Films like Vijay’s Aathi, Ajit’s Tirupathi, Arjun’s Madrasi, Vijaykanth’s Sudesi, Surya’s Sillunu Oru Kadhal, Puthupettai and others like June R, Jambavan and Nenjirikkum Varai were all duds.

At the box-office it was Vetayadu Vilayadu which was the biggest grosser as it made Rs 30 Crore worldwide for its distributors. The film had Kamal Hassan in a very different role, something he had not done before. Gautham Menon’s slick packaging along with Harris Jayaraj’s rocking music clicked with the youth.

Our audiences have also matured as they have become more script conscious and are not willing to accept a film just for the sake of a hero. They were willing to accept Vadivelu as a hero in Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi because its director Simbudevan was able to package the film with all essential ingredients and made a star out of Vadivelu.

The biggest discovery of the year was Vishal whose Sandakozhi released last December ran for 200 days and was a super hit not only in Tamilnadu but also Andhra. His Thimiru was also a big hit while Sivapathikaaram was average.

There were half a dozen celebrity weddings in Kollywood like- Laila & Mehdi(Jan 6), Surya & Jyothika (Sep 11), Manoj & Nandana (Nov 19), Renuka Menon & Suraj(Nov 30), Arun Vijay & Aarthi (Dec 1), Selva & Sonia (Dec 15).

All Ajith and Vijay fans have enough reasons to cheer. Aalwar and Pokiri are sure to release for Pongal 2007. The stand-off between distributors and producers of these two films over a discount over rates has been amicably settled.

Rama Narayanan, President, Tamil film producers Council (TFPC) said: “All films due for release on Pongal will definitely release as all issues have been sorted out.”

And the issue relating to stars taking a cut on their salary to compensate the producer’s loss has been put on back burner for the time being. Now both sides producers and stars are saying that they want to wait and see how the Pongal films are faring at the box-office.

As Rama Narayanan says: “The issue will be sorted out after the release. If any distributor has to be compensated I am sure that the stars will come to the producers help.”

High hopes! Vijay and his dad SA Chandrasekhar are still refusing to compensate distributors of Aathi their home production which flopped last Pongal!

Meanwhile Ramesh Babu and Mohan Natarajan the producers of Pokiri and Aalwar are trying to maintain status quo. Today (Jan 1, 2007) ‘Oscar’ Ravichandran has issued an ad in all newspapers for Pokiri with the tag line – Oscar Films Release, NSC area!

    Jyothirmayi in a masala film!

Jyothirmayi has made the impossible possible in Tamil. When she acted in her first Tamil film, not many knew that she was a married actress. In Tamil, the actress automatically loses her heroine status the moment she gets married. Even the gorgeous Simran was no exception to this rule.

But, after completing a few films in Tamil, Jyothirmayi's marital status doesn't remain a secret anymore.

That, however, hasn't stopped her from getting some lucrative offers. After completing her role as the first wife of EVR Periyaar, Jyothirmayi will begin acting in a film named 'Naan Avan Illai'. The film is the remake of an old film directed by K Balachander. The film is about a man who gets married to five women under different guises and eventually gets caught.

Jyothirmayi is one of the five heroines. Sneha too is one of them.

    Sneha becomes Naren's heroine

Naren (formerly known as Sunil) has slowly started to become a popular hero in Tamil. Until now, he had acted in two films and both have become hits in Tamil.

Acclaimed and controversial director Thangar Bachchan (who ended up dragging Navya Nair into a fight over payments to her hairdresser and who almost had picked up a fight with Khushboo too during the shooting of the film based on EVR Periyaar), is now making a film named 'Pallikoodam'. His previous film was an adaptation of a Malayalam flick. This time around, it won't be a remake.

Naren is playing the male lead.

The slim and gorgeous Sneha is going to be his heroine.

Naren is also starring in Shyam Prasad's 'Orey Kadal'. This is his sole film in Malayalam right now.

    'Pulan Visaaranai II' in Maldives

The shooting of 'Pulan Visaaranai II' is taking place with great secrecy at the Male group of islands.

Produced by Ibrahim Rowther, 'Pulan Visaaranai II' is being directed by RK Selvamani.

Some shots have been shot in Chennai and the director decided to shoot the film in Maldives and Andaman group of islands in the next schedule. The director and hero Prashant have located an island where no film shooting has been done till now.

When Prashant met reporters for the new year, he divulged this information. When Prashant was questioned about his troubled marital life, his father Thyagarajan answered.

"Every man has a difficult period in his life. And Prashant had a rough time last year. This year should be hopefully good. He is at present doing 'Pulan Visaaranai II' and 'Petrol.' After that, he will play the hero role in a big banner production under my direction."

    Malayalam domination spreads to Tollywood!

Kollywood is not the only film industry that Malayalam actresses have taken over. If the trend continues, they'll soon become the dominating force in the Telugu film industry too.

Even before Nayantara made her debut in Telugu, Asin had established herself as one of the leading and most promising young heroines. Just when her career was hitting a slump, Nayantara made a powerful arrival in Tollywood. She tops the list of Malayali heroines in Tollywood with three new films in her hands.

Now, Asin has bounced back very well with the recent release 'Annavaram'. Then, there are other actresses like Meera Jasmine, Gopika, Samvritha Sunil and Shridevika who all have one film each in Telugu.

Like the Tamil film industry, Tollywood too has plenty of heroines but only a very few of them are from Andhra Pradesh
