‘Ponniyin Selvan’ in hibernation mode?

When Mani Ratnam does anything it grabs the attention of film buffs throughout the country. If he does not do anything, then he still grabs the attention of the media. That is the importance the director commands from film fans across the country. When he decided to make a biopic of the Tamil epic ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ the media was following him closely. The cast and crew were in the process of being fixed with ‘Ilaya Thalapathi’ being roped in to play the protagonist. Things were getting readied for the project to go to floor during October.

Now for reasons undisclosed the director has planned to hibernate on this project. At least that is what the news circling the Kollywood circles suggest. There are also some who suggest that Madras Talkies who have been looking for a production house to sponsor this huge project have had discussions with Eros International and Sun Pictures. But now it looks like nothing has materialized from the talks.

Sources close to some of the cast in the film have also disclosed that the actors who were confirmed of their role as well as their dates for the period drama have been released from the project until further notice. However, since the director of the film had not made any official announcement regarding the pre-production or about any other aspect of filming officially, there need not be any explaining from the director’s side regarding the delay in beginning to film.

ecrets about ‘Saguni’

The posters of Karthi-starrer ‘Saguni’ on the walls of Chennai have raised enough curiosity on the film. When probed, all we got were some of the best kept secrets, which we share with you here.

The movie will be the first political satire for Karthi, in which the actor plays a role filled with suspense. Only the climax will allow the viewers to know the real face of Karthi’s character.

Since Karthi topped the box-office charts during Pongal with ‘Siruthai’, he wants to continue the good show during the end of the year too. So the film will hit the screens for Deepavali, we learn.

The actor, who will tie the knot in July, will finish ‘Saguni’ shoot in one go. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, the movie directed by debutant Shankar Dayal N will have music by G V Prakash Kumar.

​It is going to be the big Friday, as 'Agni Naksthram' season started in Chennai. The audiences are sure going to make a dash to the nearest multiplex or air-conditioned single screen to escape the heat.

Traditionally box-office collections will be at an all-time high for the next three weeks. It is the best time to release summer biggies. This week there are two new Tamil releases Engeyum Kathal and Pasakara Nanbargal, along with the Hollywood blockbuster popcorn entertainer Fast Five.

The market leader Sun Pictures have managed as usual to get best of screens for their Engeyum Kathal, which releases in 17 screens. Remember Ko and Vaanam has blocked almost all screens, including the bigger screens at all multiplexes.

The Prabhu Deva directed Jayam Ravi-Hansika romantic romp should take a decent opening depending on the word-of-mouth for the film.

Rajinikanth- On the road to recovery

The prayers of lakhs of fans of Superstar Rajinikanth were answered as the actor is back to normal.

He is on the road to total recovery after being admitted to a private hospital for breathlessness and fever.

A spokesperson at St Isabel hospital said: "Mr Rajinikanth is now doing well and on the road to total recovery. His condition is stable and needs complete rest for another week."

Rajinikanth's family members have requested his fans and friends not to visit him in the hospital.

In an interaction with the media his daughter Aishwarya said: "There is nothing to worry. He is perfectly fine. He was hospitalised due to fever and allergic bronchitis. Doctors have advised total rest and he will be under observation for two more days."

ENIGMATIC ENTITIES! - THURSDAY TRIVIA

It has been a few weeks since the TN elections took place and the public and politicians are awaiting the results with bated breath. Speculations as to who will emerge triumphant are the biggest debate on news channels and among the public. However, movie buffs out there (including us) are definitely pondering over other mysteries- the storyline of some upcoming big films! We break our heads over who plays what role and how things will start and end! Here is a list of much awaited films that has us contemplating and waiting!

• 7am Arivu: This Murugadoss-Suriya film definitely tops the list. Rumors say Suriya plays two roles and some say it is three- a Buddhist monk, circus artist and scientist! Wow! Does it get any better? But we have no clue as to what the movie is about or what is Shruti Hassan’s part in that. 7am Arivu team is definitely keeping the secret corked tight.

• Deiva Thirumagal: Albeit rumors and some obvious guesses about this movie being an inspiration from Sean Penn’s ‘I am Sam’, DT has us wondering about the plotline and about how the movie will end. We are also curious about the roles of Amala Paul, Anushka and the little girl Sara and how they all affect Vikram’s life! Well, all we can do is wait and watch!

• Mankatha: It was recently in news that Ajith, Premgi, Vaibav and Ashwin will play the roles of cricket match fixers and Arjun will play a cop. How do they fix matches? Why do they do it? Will they end up getting caught? All these questions remain unanswered but Ajith sure looks dapper in the Salt ‘n Pepper look and smart suits.

• Velayudham: Vijay is a milkman, he has a sister (Saranya Mohan) and Hansika is his love interest, or is she? We are also seeing Genelia cozying up with Vijay and she is touted to play the role of a journalist in this movie. We wonder what the movie will be about and how it will resolve!

Selvaraghavan-Dhanush project progress

Director Selvaraghavan is directing his brother Dhanush in the tentatively titled Erandam Ulagam. This film has Andrea playing Dhanush’s pair. EI’s shooting is progressing at a rapid speed in Kannur in Kerala. The director wants to complete this project soon as he is gearing up for his wedding with Gitanjali in July. EI’s audio launch is scheduled to be held in July and film itself will be released in the month of August.

GV Prakash, the music director of EI, has thus far scored five songs and is in the process of composing the sixth song. The title is likely to undergo a change because it has already been registered by a politician-producer who is unwilling to part with it.

'Action King' Arjun who is in news for playing a cop in Ajith's Mankatha is now gearing up to shoot his next solo hero film. One of Arjun's favourite director Ilankannan has written a script for the actor and he immediately accepted it. Illankannan has previously directed Arjun's Otran. This new film has been titled Om and will have the usual stunt ingredients that is staple in Arjun's films. Rest of the cast and crew will be finalized soon and shooting will start by next month.

Meanwhile the actor is waiting for the release of Maasi in which he has once again played the role of a cop. The movie is touted to be a realistic one with plenty of 'amma' sentiment and other necessary spices. Arjun will be romancing two new faces in this movie. Looks like we will be seeing a lot of Arjun on the screens soon!
