    ‘We’ll wed by next year’

    Garima Sharma

Delhi restaurateur Shiv Karan Singh and his actress girlfriend Reemma Sen are all set to tie the knot. “Our wedding will happen by next year,” she told us. “We haven’t fixed a date yet, though. Our parents are happy with our decision, and have accepted. Actually, I always wanted a handsome Punjab da puttar for a husband, and that’s what I’ve got with Shiv. I love everything Punjabi — even the cuisine! Anything that’s fried and oily, basically,” she laughed.
Will she shift to Delhi after her marriage? “Of course. How else is it possible?” she said. “I already love Delhi and feel at home here,” she added. And what’s keeping her busy on the work front? “I’m busy with Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur and Rahul Dholakia’s next,” she said.

    Fighting piracy, the digital way

After trying to curtail illegal digital distribution of music, the music industry has decided to counter piracy by legalizing one of the distribution channels

    M Suganth

For long, piracy has been the bane of the music industry. While the Internet boom killed the physical sales (cassettes and CDs), the mobile revolution has made the concept of legal digital downloads a tough sell. But now, the south Indian music industry seems to have found a way to curb piracy. The South Indian Digital Music Management (SIDMM), an affiliate of South India Music Companies Association (SIMCA), has now launched an official bank of music from which mobile retail outlets and traders can obtain a license to copy songs onto memory cards.
J Swaminathan, Secretary — SIMCA, says, “For the past 30 years, the music industry has been fighting piracy but with little effect. Now, we have decided to legalize a distribution channel — mobile retailers, who usually tend to copying songs on to memory cards for customers. Mobile retailers will have to sign up with us for a nominal fee ( 15,000 to 24,000 per year) and can legally distribute the songs produced by 42 audio labels.”
A three-member anti-piracy team, headed by retired Superintendent of Police P Madhavarajan, will be monitoring the outlets throughout the state. “Those who distribute music without obtaining the license will be charged under the existing copyright laws that are applied to video pirates,” he says.
The success of this venture could lead to a legal music distribution system, predict industry experts, as audio labels have now realized that digital is where the future lies.
“Five years ago, we were producing around five lakhs CDs. Today, not more than one lakh CDs are produced even for big-budget films,” says the marketing head of a Chennai-based music label, agreeing that most of the revenue today comes from digital music – music that you can buy through online stores, mobile applications comprising the songs, and mobile services, like ring back tones and caller tunes.
    THE MUSIC BUSINESS

    • Revenue of music industry 10 years ago – 1200 cr

    • Present Revenue – 672 cr

    • Present physical production – 3,000 to 5,000 CDs (for small films); 50,000 to two lakh (for star films)

No more new film launches in Kollywood!

    2011-09-06 09:47:14

The southern film producers belonging to Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and industry have decided not to start new films from September 7th, 2011.

This joint decision was taken following a deadlock in the meeting between the cine workers union FEFSI and the producers over salary increase.

On Monday evening, the producers from the south industry met at the Film Chamber in Chennai to thrash out the vexing issue. The workers union are demanding a 80 to 100 % increase in daily bata, while the producers are not willing for such a huge increase.

The producers want to peg it around 25 to 30 % increase in daily bata, due to inflation and wants FEFSI to sign a deal valid for the next three years. The producers have made it clear that the work going on in films which are under production will continue till Diwali (October26), before a final decision is made.

Meanwhile FEFSI Secretary G Siva has said that all the workers union will be meeting shortly to tackle the salary issue. Till then their members will not disrupt any film shooting and will cooperate.

    Selvaraghavan croons for GV Prakash!

    2011-09-06 10:26:56
    Last Updated: 2011-09-06 10:37:00

Director Selvaraghavan has crooned for one song in Mayakkam Enna under music director GV Prakash Kumar.

The music director was keeping this news under the wraps on Selva’s request as he has even discouraged GV to use his name in the audio cover.
The song Kaadhal Yen Kaadhal is sung by Dhanush and Selvarghavan with lyrics written by the duo.

Says GV: “We made Selva sing the track and when I heard it I was sure that this was the husky and raw voice that I was looking for. It took me a long of time to convince him and we went for the take. Now this will be one of the highlights of the album”.
All the songs in the album are peppy and GV is sure to strike hat trick after the super success of Aadukalam and Deivathirumagal audio.

In fact the young music director has sung a soothing number with Saindhavi, his fiancee.

Another song which is sure to catch the attention is the solo song Voda Voda Vodaa.. sung by Dhanush.
