Kollywood- 133 releases in 2011
2012-01-03 10:12:01
The final tally of Tamil releases for 2011 stood at 133 releases.
It is 16 short of 2010’s record 149 releases. If you take the number of dubbed films into consideration it may touch 185 to 190.
There are about 50 to 60 dubbed films from other languages- English, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi.
Out of these 133 releases there are two blockbusters, three super hits four hits and three films that may break even. That means the films which have been profitable are a measly 7 %.
Theatrical collections have come down after the introduction of 30 % entertainment taxes.
Today the scenario is frightening that out of every Re 1 collected at the box-office, 30 paisa goes for taxes, 35 paisa for exhibitors, 5 paisa as distributor’s commission and only 30 paisa goes back to the producers.
Films which have been profitable from Indian domestic theatrical collections alone are Mankatha, Ko and Kanchana. Another seven may be profitable if you take into consideration their audio, overseas, Home video and television rights

The self confessed wild child, STR as he likes to be called now, in an exclusive chat with Sify.com said: “I am very happy by the way people have accepted my song. I am off to US to record the song with two international pop stars most probably on Jan 10 in Los Angeles and I had said earlier the song is my message for world peace”.
On why people are compare Love Anthem with Kolaveri, pat comes the reply: “First and foremost my song is not a part or promotion of any film and I have not done it for publicity. It’s an independent song with a message that people should love each other".
2011 has been wonderful for STR as his Vaanam was a hit. Remember that the actor had the guts to move away from KV Anand project Ko and did Vaanam, a film that he believed in. He then gave his best for Osthi a mass entertainer which banked heavily on the charisma of its protagonist and it was STR’s superlative performance that earned him accolades.
And in 2012, STR will complete Poda Podi, will resume Vettai Mannan and has Vetrimaran’s Vadachennai which will start rolling in June has the industry pushing him a notch higher this year.
