Rajinikanth on hunger strike?

Tamil superstar Rajinikanth is reportedly on a hunger strike. The star joined artists from the Tamil film and television industry to protest against service tax on entertainment industry, according to a report on a national news channel website.

Rajinikanth reportedly said that much money could be mobilised if there's a tough law to book tax defaulters. Other stars who joined the day-long protest include southern actors Vijay, Sarathkumar, Radhika and Suhasini.

The protestors demand artists, directors and choreographers to be exempt from paying service tax. The cess of 12.36 per cent, they argue, should not apply because the service tax on the entertainment industry was partly lifted a few years ago exempting producers, exhibitors and distributors, the report said.

Now the industry wants this to be extended to artists, directors and choreographers too. Report said that the theatres across the state will remain closed till evening. Night shows, however, will still be played.
