    Award function – enjoyable scenes

Yesterday was a special day for Tamil cinema. It is indeed a special occasion when top stars like Vijay, Vikram, Ajith and Surya come together for a function. This was possible because of the Tamilnadu govt film awards function.

It was a grand program. In the afternoon, fans started gathering outside the University Centenary Auditorium in Chennai. Naturally, only those with invitation were allowed admission to the program.

The cultural program started from 4pm onwards. Prominent playback singers sang to the music of Yuvan Shankar Raja and Harris Jayaraj. This was followed by dances by Nila, Lakshmi Rai and Namitha.

At 5pm, the award function commenced under the leadership of Tamilnadu Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala.

Kamal wore a black shirt. Rajini was clad in white dhoti and shirt. Ajith was clad in a suit as usual and Vijay was sporting a pair of glasses. Rajini started his speech by explaining his appearance, saying his daughters had made him remove his beard and dye his hair and moustache!

He spoke about the Sethusamudram project, the film 'Periyar,' lauded the work of Karthi, Priya Mani and Ameer in 'Paruthiveeran' and one could see the extra happiness on the faces of those concerned. He also mentioned being invited to do Ravana's role in 'Lankeswaran' and when he spoke of this or that "adhurudhu," everyone in the audience cheered him on!

Ajith and Vijay were sitting next to each other and it was nice to see them both talking and laughing together. Kamal appreciated being given a book instead of the traditional shawl.

An emotional TM Soundararajan received the Thyagaraja Bhagavathar award and the CM blessed him with a hand on his head.

    The function ended at 8.30pm.

"I have nothing to do in Tamil"- Navya

Navya Nair sounds like a disillusioned person when it comes to her ambitious career in Tamil.

The actress was slowly and steadily building a good career in Malayalam but that was when she suddenly got an offer to star in a Tamil film. She shifted her base to Tamil and was doing a fairly good job until she was caught in rumors of an affair with her 'Maayakannadi' co-star, Cheran. Though many assumed that it was part of the film's publicity stunt, her career never quite recovered from it.

When asked now, she gets very philosophical about her career in Kollywood. "Tamil cinema is obsessed with glamour and frankly I have nothing to do in the language. I love doing family-oriented roles but there aren't that many roles of that kind in Tamil. That's the reason why you aren't seeing me in that many films these days. I have now decided that I'll concentrate more on Malayalam films in future," she said.

That's what they all say when they run out of market in other languages.

Seems tamilians are making socially relevant films ,while we are stuck with outdated concepts or imitating crap tamil movies..

    http://sify.com/movies/tamil/review....tid=5&cid=2429

Jeeva’s, Ram Subbu directed Katrathu Tamil is a daringly different film, which gets into the mind of a psychopath and explores it. An ordinary young man, frustrated by his circumstances and futility of his job, slowly loses his mental balance and becomes a psychopath, and when he gets redeemed it’s too late.
The film is showcased by the director to highlight the performance of Jeeva. Armed with a well written role of Prabhakar, a brilliant post-graduate in Tamil, the actor brings a primal mixture of beauty, love, affection, and savagery to his one-man act. The scene where he confronts a call centre employee, in the middle of the night on a deserted street and pours his scorn and frustration at the system is brilliant.

Prabhakar (Jeeva) is a Tamil teacher in a private school in west Mambalam area of Chennai, who leads a lonely life in a lodge. He is frustrated and even tries to commit suicide, in a system where knowing your mother tongue and teaching it is looked down upon by a society craving for material benefits and imbalance in pay structure. 10 years back, there were people who were getting Rs 2000 and Rs 20000, but today all that have changed as there are individuals working for IT companies drawing Rs 2 lakhs as salary, while the guy who gets Rs 2000 is still there trying to eke out a living!

Prabhakar, for no fault of his is at the receiving end, terrorised by cops and on the run after killing a railway booking clerk in a fit of rage. He roams all around the country and joins some saadhus, high on pot and also grows his hair long and keeps a shaggy beard. Finally he wants to exorcise the devils within and at gun point kidnaps a television anchor (Karnas), who records his life story, where he confesses to killing 22 people in cold blood! In the flashback he reveals his past, his upbringing by a Tamil teacher (director Azhagarperumal in a great cameo), and his childhood sweet heart, (Anjali) who later in his life becomes an obsession for him.

The entire film is told in the way of a first person narrative, which at times slows down the tempo, and there is a bit of blood and gore which could have been trimmed. There are times especially towards the climax, where the film veers perilously close to being a stock revenge saga (Prabhakar killing the cop who badly beat him up) Yuvan’s melancholic numbers are first rate with his dad Ilayaraaja song Paarvayin Yen Ingu Irukurai… being the pick of the lot. Yuvan has also created the right mood in the background score which enhances the movie. Kadhir’s gritty camera which travels all over the country, is another plus point.

Ram Subbu’s script and characterization of Prabhakar, pours plenty of heartfelt emotion into the film’s more dramatic moments. The film is high-brow, but if you are looking for a fresh off-kilter cinematic experience, then you don’t want to miss Katrathu Tamil.

Ileana first actress to get a crore

Ileana has been in the news for long time concerning the huge amount of remuneration that she gets – unlike any other actress in the field. It’s hardly two years and she gets paid the in the above 50 lakhs range. Recently she was asked about the same again by journalists to whom she replied that she is getting paid a crore. We don’t know if she was lying or saying it just to keep away the reporters but the chances are that it is very true.

Recently she made certain remarks about all that is printed and written about her. The actress, who seems to be respectful of her seniors in the industry while at the same time making sure that people give her due, said that she is absolutely elated with her success. She is the number one actress in Telugu and she is also making her Bollywood debut soon for which she has just shot for in South Africa.

While may say that she is “moving” to Bollywood, she said that she is doing no such thing. She said that she will disclose no more than this until the time is right. She said that she is a short-tempered person but she manages to keep her temper to herself and not throw around on the sets of her film. As far as her remuneration is concerned, she said that that is absolutely her business and nobody needs to interfere in those affairs.

Finally one question that we are all dying to know is about love. Well she says - oka manchi abbayi vunte cheppandi. When she gets married and when she gets a boyfriend, she will let everybody including the media know about it. Well now that she let the cat out of the box it seems that people wont stop guessing even if she entertains no queries about the issue. So we can expect a lot of rumours and till Ileana says that they are true we can say they are not true.

Act as a hero....? -AR Rehman laughs

AR Rehman's music is gaining worldwide popularity. Now there's a good opportunity to enjoy seeing his music in person.

Two programs of AR Rehman have been arranged in Delhi next month. When asked about it, he says, "It has been my long time wish to give a music program in Delhi. I am happy that a grand program has been arranged in the month of December. I am rather tense because I want the program to go well. I also have to dub my songs for the Hindi version of 'Sivaji.'"

Do you aspire to become an actor?

"Many musicians are attempting to act in films, but I do not aspire to become a film hero. Such a question only makes me laugh. I have absolutely no interest in acting, nor do I have any acting talent," says Rehman with a laugh.

He is anyway a hero in music!
