No Oscars for Eklavya IndiaGlitz [Thursday, January 17, 2008]


Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s multi-starrer spectacle Eklavya was poorly received by the Indian audiences. Even the likes of Amitabh Bachchan , Saif Ali Khan, Sanjay Dutt and Vidya Balan couldn’t do anything for the film’s box office.

The film was then nominated as India’s official entry to the Oscars. This led to a controversial debate amongst various members of the film industry claiming that Vidhu had influenced the jury members to select his film over the much deserved Bhavna Talwar’s Dharm.

Bhavna whose Dharm received immense appreciation at the Cannes Film Festival, took the matter to court. Bad news comes in for India as Eklavya fails to make it to the list of movies shortlisted for the glorious Oscars.

The nine films that made it in the final list include The Counterfeiters (Austria), The Year My Parents Went on Vacation (Brazil), Mongol (Kazakhstan), The Trap (Serbia), Days of Darkness (Canada), Beaufort (Israel), The Unknown Woman (Italy) , Katyn (Poland) and 12 (Russia).

Dabboo Ratnani’s 2007 calendar was filled with bright, light pictures. So for his 2008 venture he took a different inspiration. “I didn’t want it to be glamorous,” said the celebrated photographer. “Here we kept it a little more dark, warm and with high density.”

The 2008 calendar features 24 of Bollywood’s hottest hunks like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Rampal, Abhishek Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan, Bobby Deol, Vivek Oberoi and Shahid Kapoor. Salman Khan plays a Sikh

Actor Salman Khan assumes a new avatar in director Samir Karnik’s upcoming film.

We have seen him sport long hair and we have also seen him in clean-shaven pate. Now, Bollywood star Salman Khan has turned a Sikh for the film ‘Heroes’, which was previously titled Mera Bharat Mahaan .

The movie has Salman playing a Sikh soldier from Punjab.

Obviously Salman wore a turban and grew his bread to play the character. The actor reportedly did not shave for three weeks to get a perfect bearded look despite having an option to use a fake beard.

Apart from Salman, the film stars Sunny Deol , Sohail Khan , Bobby Deol , Preity Zinta , Amrita Arora and Mithun Chakraborty .

The film is a road movie about a group of students who go on a road trip to make a documentary on India.

‘Heroes’ has been shot in Ladakh, Chandigarh, Punjab and Delhi. The film is set to hit the theatres on May 1.

During the shooting of the film in ‘Ladakh’, Salman, along with other stars, often went out on long motorcycle rides to Buddhist monasteries in the region.

Salman strongly believes in harmony among different faiths and religions. He has also visited the holiest shrine of Sikhs, The Golden Temple, in the past.

Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia pair again




Senior actors Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia hope to revive their sizzling chemistry of yore in Zoya Akhtar’s first film.

They once used to be a hot jodi. Rishi and Dimple gave a new definition to onscreen love in their teenage romance flick Bobby in 1973. Later, they came together for Ramesh Sippy’s love triangle ‘Saagar’. Their recent pairing in Hriday Shetty’s movie Pyaar Mein Twist went without much notice.

But now, Rishi and Dimple are teaming up again to revive their onscreen magic.

The duo has been signed to play important roles in Zoya Akhtar’s film Luck By Chance , which takes a tongue-in-cheek.look at the Hindi film industry.

The film has Zoya’s brother Farhan Akhtar playing the male lead opposite Konkona Sen Sharma . Hrithik Roshan will make a guest appearance.

The movie’s shooting is set to begin in March this year. It is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani.

The Berlinale Special shows, as part of the official programme, works of contemporary filmmakers that the festival honours. The festival shows extraordinary new productions to honour great cinema personalities by showing their films and to immerse audiences in cinematic history by screening film classics. Films which deserve special attention due to current events can also be shown as part of the Berlinale Special. Furthermore the programme presents films in honour of those who receive a Berlinale Camera, films by or about outstanding persons of film whom the festival feels especially attached to.

Om Shanti Om is among 11 films selected this year. Directed by Farah Khan and produced by Gauri Khan, Om Shanti Om stars superstar Shah Rukh Khan, glamorous Deepika Padukone, debonair Arjun Rampal and talented Shreyas Talpade.

The film will have a German Premiere at the festival on 8th February, 8:00pm at Kino Internazionale attended by Shah Rukh Khan.

Eros International will be releasing Om Shanti Om theatrically in Germany soon after the Berlin Film Festival.
