there was a recent article in The Hindu on how Ship of Theseus enjoyed overwhelming critical raves because most of them didn't want to be seen as people who didn't 'get' the film. athil masand-inte kaaryam paranjirunnu...

innale The Front Row-il there was an engaging discussion with irrfan khan, john abraham and vikramaditya motwane...
irrfan kept on repeating the irony of media focusing on big films making it to the 100 crore and 200 crore clubs (when some of these films, in the final analysis, are losses!) and ignoring small films that did very impressive 40 crore or 50 crore business...
he also made fun of 'public' getting excited over these financial figures while all they should be discussing was whether they liked the film or not... the analogy he used was "it's like housewives commenting on the shot-making ability of Sachin Tendulkar".
    Be kind, rewind.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero Has Below Average First Day

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero has had an average first day at the box office as it has been let down by business at multiplexes. The single screens have recorded good numbers but the multiplex business is well below the mark especially Mumbai, Delhi, Punjab, Kolkata amd Bangalore.

The film should manage to cross the 6 crore nett mark and maybe even go towards the 7 crore nett mark which are below average numbers, the film had to be around the 9-10 crore nett mark to make it a good opening day.

There is potential for it grow as opening day is low but it will need huge growth to come with respectable numbers and the sort of growth needed is hard to come by with these type of mass entertainers.

On an intellectual level, 'Ship of Thesues' is somewhat like 'Inception'. It requires apt attention and a 'sponge-soak' level more than the usual movies manufactured over here. And I frankly believe, Masand did not understood the movie. He must have racked through the websites, explanatory notes and director synopsis workshops to understand what the movie must have tried to say. Those might have dazzled him and he ends up saying 'the movie dazzled his brains'. For 'The Lunchbox' I think it has more to do with the involvement of Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap and the possible accolades that the movie might fetch up in the coming months that forced Masand to put up a 5. Going by his attitude, a movie howmuchever good it maybe, if it delved into the topic of romance, Masand the prick, on any day, would not have happily given that rating.

Not being a chauvinist to claim that house-wives don't know anything between Wales and bails, but the essence of that statement is note-worthy. Audience is more concerned about the star and the box-office collections rather than the quality of the movie. 10 people liked it so I like it. No-one is bothered to re-think: 10 people liked it, did I really like it? Last week, I had a chance to see the Irrfan Khan movie 'Qissa'. Was blown off by the movie. A really experience of a movie. Now, how many know of this movie or care to watch it when 'Besharam' is around the corner?

Wonder whether it is a publicity attempt to cover up the flaw in the script.

Personally, I don't think Milkha is such a great movie. Would have loved to see 'Theseus' make it since it has got stupendous reviews and the plot seems really original. Even 'Lunchbox' which has made ripples in the international scene would have been a better choice. But it seems the committee also takes commercial success into consideration. If that is the case, why don't they send 'Chennai Express'.
Gujarati movie 'The Good Road' by debut director Gyan Correa has been selected as India's entry for the Oscar Awards. This film had won the National Award for best feature film in the Gujarati language. The jury headed by Gautam Ghosh, selected the movie over better-know contenders 'The Lunchbox', 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag', 'English Vinglish', 'Vishwaroopam' and 'Celluloid'. Karan Johar and Anurag Kashyap, producers of 'The Lunchbox' which had caused a sensation at Cannes, have vented out their anger on Twitter. Personally I think, 'The Lunchbox' would have been a better choice because these producers would have shelved out the required money for getting the movie watched by the people who mattered in the Oscars and the presence of Irrfan Khan (who is already well-known internationally after 'Slumdog Millionaire' and 'Life of Pi', two former Oscar winners) would have greatly helped.
