Guys, bought the shooting script of Rang De Basanti. Read some interesting things shared by the people behind the movie. Thought to share it here.

1989. Revolution at Tiananmen Square, Beijing.

1990. Anti-reservation Mandal commission outcry in Delhi.

1991. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra (director of RDB) studies in Delhi University which was a politically vibrant place. The students over there blame the system for everything and nurture notions of revolt but once they complete their studies, they go about with their careers. Rakeysh gets into advertising.

1997. Rakeysh Mehra directs his first documentary MamuliRam: The Little Big Man, based on the life of Varghese Kurian, the malayalee who heralded the Milk Revolution in Gujarat. The documentary was produced by Amul and was written by Kamlesh Pandey (the story-writer of RDB). That is how Rakeysh and Kamlesh get into contact. Gujarat being booze-free, they spend their off-times talking about poetry, movies and politics. A topic that constantly came up was the armed revolutions against the British. They decide to make a documentary based on Bhagat Singh with the title ‘The Young Guns of India'.

1998. Kamlesh Pandey is approached by a TV journo to write a series on Bhagat Singh. Gave him a lot of books and reference materials. Somehow finance matters stalled the project.

1999. Kamlesh comes up with first draft of ‘The Young Guns of India’ but the project never took off.

2001. Rakeysh directs his first movie Aks, with story by Kamlesh and script by Rensil D’Silva, who Rakeysh knew from his advertisement days.

2002. Rakeysh decides to turn The Young Guns of India into a movie. They approach college-going students in Delhi and Bombay to check if they were interested in the subject. The youngsters reject the idea. This makes Rakeysh and Kamlesh to go along with the scripting and to include youngsters into the plot focussing on how today's youth had lost the desire to revolt. They think a lot about how to bring Bhagat Singh into post-2000 India. Kamlesh was against the idea of using ghost (which was of course, later used by Rajkumar Hirani in Lage Raho Munnabhai with Gandhiji). Pitching the story with friends bought in the angle of a movie in a movie and the gimmick of roles taking over characters.

2003. Rakeysh gets to meet AR Rahman through a producer friend. Rakeysh tells him a coule of story ideas and Rahman encourages him with the RDB one. Rahman is the first person other than the writers, who believes the plot has something to say. Rahman starts composing freedom-based, revolutionary tunes. Rahman also advises them to make the plot and treatment more contemporary.

2004. Rakeysh pulls in Rensil D’Silva who makes the script and characters more energetic and youthful. Siddharth and Kunal Kapoor are the first to be cast.

2005. Rahman gets Rakeysh a chance to narrate the plot to Aamir. On hearing abur revolution and Bhagat Singh, Aamir says no. The failure of Mangal Pandey and failure of 4 movies on Bhagat Singh (3 in Bollywood, 1 in Punjabi) were the reason. Two hours it took for Rakeysh to convince him. Aamir on board, other things fell in place quickly.

Initially the climax of the movie was: the assassination takes up, the boys go into hiding and are captured but it brings about a change in society where ‘corrupt politicians are hanged on telephone poles’ (like PM Pandit Nehru had said in 1957). Sounded like '4 The People' to me. It was Aamir who put in the suggestion that, just like Bhagat Singh surrendered to the law, DJ and gang should surrender themselves rather than getting caught. Detailed storyboard and planned pre-production makes the shoot quick and effective. Early screenings were held. Positive response but questions were asked as to ‘why the boys had to be killed?’. Bhagat Singh and fellows attained immortality. That’s what Rakesysh, Kamlesh and Rensil had in mind but they couldn’t conjure it up. Editor Bharati (who later won possibly all awards for editing for RDB) pitches in the post-climax scenes. The movie goes into shoot again. Rakeysh portrays the role of Bhagat Singh’s father in the post-climatic scene.

    2006 January. RDB gets released.

RDB Effect: Vikas and Vishal Yadav, sons of an influential politician, were awarded life sentence in 2008 for honor killing in the Nitish Katara murder case. Manu Sharma, son of an influential minister, awarded life imprisonment in 2010 in the Jessica Lal murder case. Santosh Singh, son of IG Delhi police, was awarded death sentence in October 2006 for brutal rape and murder of Priyadarshini Mattoo. In all these cases, initially the accused were left off for lack of evidence, following public outcry, mass parades and justice campaigns, the cases were reopened and sentences were awarded.
