    SUPERNOVA 2010: TOP 50

Take a look at the stars in the Bollywood sky, who made it to our power list for the year gone by

I f the people on the zoOm Supernova list, shut shop or moved away, Bollywood as we know it would cease to exist. Or be unrecognizable in the very least. That’s the kind of power they wield over the film industry. Sure, they may not be able to move mountains or walk on water (just yet) but it’s amazing what they can accomplish with their star pull. The folks on this list are supernovas in every sense of the term, with the Top 10, holding the clout to change fortunes. Be it numero uno Salman Khan, who made a complete newbie (Sonakshi) a household name with just one film and showed an ex (Katrina Kaif), that managing without him in B-Town would be difficult despite her own meteoric rise or an Aamir Khan, who’s widely considered the m a a i - b a a p of marketing, Rajinikanth who is a demigod unto himself, for Shah Rukh Khan who may be lower down the order but is the preacher of the power of PR (public relations) and has a stranglehold on the overseas market, they’re all masters of the game. It took A R Rahman’s awesome music to propel a film like S l u m d o g M i l l i o n a i r e and an acting veteran like Anil Kapoor into the Hollywood stratosphere. And how can we forget Katrina Kaif, the Sheila who salvaged the initial opening of Te e s M a a r K h a n with her moves in one scorching item number and is the only gal on our top 10. Together, they make the B-Town world go round…

    SONGOF THE WEEK

    Accha lagta hai: Aarakshan

    . — Bryan Durham

Mohit Chauhan and Shreya Goshal lend voice to Prasoon Joshi’s mischievous lyrics. Achha Lagta Hai lists the things Saif Ali Khan’s character likes in the object of his attention in Aarakshan, Deepika Padukone. There’s more aakarshan in this song than anything else. If it sounds suspiciously similar in tempo, lyrics and feel to the Achhe Lagte Ho track from Kuch Naa Kaho, it’s probably because the two tracks have one thing in common: the music composer trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. It sounds so much like an updated version, you almost write it off as just that. What works for this one, however, is the easyon-the-ears vocals by Mohit and Shreya, instantly hummable lyrics and a peppi-

    Dull Opening For New Releases

    Friday 29th July 2011 12.00 IST

    Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Bubble Gum, Gandhi To Hitler and Bubble Gum all opened to extremely poor houses of around 5%. The films have managed a very poor multiplex release as we have films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Singham going strong while the programmers at multiplexes this week have preferred the Hollywood releases like Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs and The Lion King.

The best opening from Hollywood is for Coyboy & Aliens which had a 20-25% opening. The Smurfs opened at 30-35% but only for the 3D version, the 2D version opened at around the 10-15% mark.

Singham continues phenomenal run in Maharashtra, CP Berer amd Nizam while Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is still number one choice even its third week in Delhi NCR, Kolkata and Bangalore.

BOL Beats Ready And MNIK In Pakistan

    Friday 29th July 2011 13.30 IST

    Press Release

Talented director Shoaib Mansoor is back with a hard hitting social drama tittled ‘Bol’ after his critically acclaimed and award winning ‘Khuda Kay Liye’.

Eros International’s ‘Bol’, in association with Geo Films and Shoman Productions revolves around the story of a girl, a daughter who stands up and challenges the age old societal norms of treating women as lesser beings.

The movie stars renowned Pakistani actress Humaima Malick in the lead and singing sensation Atif Aslam and Iman Ali along with many other renowned Pakistani actors.

Critics who have seen the movie are completely floored at how the director Shoaib Mansoor has depicted the status of women in Pakistan and tread no-go areas like homosexuality and the life of eunuchs besides Shia-Sunni dynamics in a nation dominated by Sunnis in the movie.

The movie which released in Pakistan on 24th June along with Double Dhamaal has been receiving outstanding reviews from critics and audiences alike. In fact, the movie has been declared a super hit as it has received a tremendous opening and grossed about 49 lacs on the first day beating many high grossers like Ready and My Name Is Khan. (Ready’s first day grossing was 40 lacs).

Produced by Shahid Jamal and Shoaib Mansoor, ‘Bol’ is based in Lahore & aims at highlighting the sorry plight of women who are treated as a worthless burden to a family in most parts of the society.

‘Bol’ is slated for an Eid release on 31st August in India and rest of the world

APJ Abdul Kalam bowled over by I Am Kalam

The movie I am Kalam has managed to impress the former president of India, APJ Abdul Kalam.

Kalam, who had come to see the promo, was impressed by the promo of the film that revolves around the life of a poor Rajasthani boy, Chhotu, who is inspired by Abdul Kalam.

"While watching the film, some thoughts went in my mind... that I have met 12 million youth in a decade from all over the country," he said after watching the promo of the Nila Madhab Panda-directed film.

The movie tells the story of a poor boy, who is inspired by the former president so much so that he starts referring to himself as Kalam.

"The movie made me realise that every person can make changes in others lives. We should promote education in villages. I have started PURA (Provision of Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) scheme). We need to create employment to parents so that they can send their children to school," he said.

He also asked Panda to take his film to rural schools and colleges. Set in Bikaner, Rajasthan, I Am Kalam describes the hunger of Chhotu (played by Delhi slum boy Harsh Mayar) for education, something which he cannot aspire to have because of penury.

Chhotu starts referring to himself as Kalam after watching on TV the former president speak about how he got his education fighting several odds with the help of his prince friend (played by Hussan Saad of Delhi 6 fame).

Kalam said the right to education bill is not enough unless there are good primary school teachers, especially in remote villages.

Recalling his childhood, he said his dream to become a space scientist was given to him by his fifth class teacher, who radiated knowledge and purity.

Kalam said all these years he met so many youths. "I ask myself, 'What have I learnt?' I have realised one thing that children are a big force. The ignited mind of the youth is the most powerful resource on the earth, above the earth and below the earth. We have got 600 million youth, no other democratic country has got this," he said.

"If you have great aim in life and acquire the knowledge, it does not matter who you are you will reach your goal. Urban education is not enough, good education must reach remote villages, " added Kalam.

"The recent Right to Education Bill that Parliament has passed for compulsory free education is not sufficient. We need good primary teachers because he will create a creative classroom," he said.

"My aim to become a space scientist was because of my fifth class school teacher. I was a 10-year-old child in British India of 1941. I was studying in a panchayat school. I remember my science teacher Shiv Subramani Aiyar and he once taught us about how the birds fly. He even took us to sea shore to show us how they flew and changed the direction. This is where my dream was born. I knew that I will do something related to flight. I took physics, learnt about aeronautics engineer and space scientist," Kalam recalled.

The film premiered at 63rd Cannes Film Festival on May 12 and has been showcased in various film festivals bagging various awards and honors.
