    Priyanka Chopra does a Hazare

Priyanka Chopra, it seems, is carrying her penchant for method acting as far as it can go.

For her previous roles in Ashutosh Gowariker's What's Your Raashee and Vishal Bhardwaj's Saat Khoon Maaf, Priyanka gained and lost weight so drastically that it affected her metabolism and health severely.

Now for Anurag Basu's Barfee, last week in Ooty, Priyanka has done an Anna Hazare, so to speak.

For a sequence that required her character to be locked away in a room for three days without food, water or any company, PC declared she would go the whole hog. No faking for the character, she declared.

Says a source, "At first Ranbir laughed off Priyanka's method acting. Tu Marlon Brando hai kya, the actor joked. He told her to 'just act' the sequence.

But PC was adamant. She made it very clear to Anurag that she would actually go through her character's ordeal for three days."

    Getting conditional

All attempts to dissuade the actress failed and Anurag had to give in. However, the director had a condition, that he too, will join her.

Says a source, "To Anurag, who had written the character and the sequence, it seemed unfair that Priyanka should go at it alone.

He insisted on going through what the actress' character suffers when confined to a solitary life. Only then did Anurag allow Priyanka to go through the harrowing experience herself."

Significantly, both Anurag and Priyanka have health issues and could 'ill' afford the luxury of "living" their character's trauma. In fact, PC has earlier suffered two bouts of fatigue and nervous exhaustion, which put her in the hospital.

The Barfee experience of staying without food, water and company for three days has been serious pressure on the health of both the actress and the director. Priyanka, we are told, remained silent and unresponsive for a week after the shooting.

Says the source, "We all tried to dissuade both of them from this madness. But they wouldn't listen. First Anurag locked himself away in the room in Ooty that Priyanka's character was supposed to be confined in. And then she went through the three-day isolation."

The spokesperson for Barfee confirmed the above story.

Why Mausam Failed To Make It To Cinemas

September 16th, 2011 by Komal Nahta

    Comments ( 0 )

Koimoi.com Editor Komal Nahta clears the air around the controversy over the postponement of Mausam’s release.
As mentioned on 12th September, Eros International and Sheetal Talwar’s Mausam could not be released this week and will now come on 23rdSeptember. Although it was evident on 12th September that Pankaj Kapur’s maiden directorial venture would not be able to make it to the screens on 16th, as scheduled, the producers made a formal announcement to this effect only late in the evening on 13th, adding to the confusion in the minds of the film’s distributors and exhibitors as talks of the postponement had spread like wild fire. Your favourite website, Koimoi.com, was the first to report the news of the postponement on 12th around 8 p.m. Although Eros and Talwar did not deny the news, they were tight-lipped till around 24 hours after that.
There were some readers who sent us hate messages on reading our story of the postponement of release of Mausam as they felt, we were jumping the gun in the absence of confirmation from the producers. But, of course, they must now be eating humble pie.
The postponement was necessitated because of the delay in getting the No Objection Certificate from the Indian Air Force which wanted Pankaj Kapur to delete some shots from the film. Both, Pankaj Kapur and Sheetal Talwar were confident, they’d be able to secure the NOC without effecting the cuts but the IAF authorities were clear that they would not part with the NOC till the cuts were carried out. Meanwhile, the CBFC saw the film late on 12th September and even okayed it but the physical copy of the censor certificate was obtained only on 13th evening. The 24-hour delay in receiving the censor certificate was because the CBFC asked the producers to put a disclaimer in the film to the effect thet the IAF aeroplane fights were fictional. Meanwhile, Talwar and Kapur tried their best to make the IAF authorities see their point of view. Ultimately, Pankaj Kapur had to effect the cuts after which the NOC was obtained from the IAF on 13th afternoon.
However, it was too late to catch the release date of 16th September as the prints couldn’t have possibly reached the Overseas destinations for release on Thursday/Friday.
At a hurriedly-called press conference on 14th, Pankaj Kapur announced the postponement and praised the IAF for extending all co-operation to him and the unit while the film was being shot. Shahid Kapoor plays an IAF pilot in the film.
Interestingly, Sheetal Talwar went underground from 13th once it was clear that the film would not be able to hit the screens on 16th. He remained incommunicado till 15th. He did not even attend the press conference on 14th.
Even while all the tension over the IAF NOC and the censor certificate was going on, a producer moved the court to seek a stay on the release of Mausam but failed. The case is an old one involving producer Nawman Malik who claimed that the title was allotted to him before it was given to Sheetal Talwar. The case had been dismissed by the Bombay high court but Malik has approached against the order. The bench dismissed the appeal on 13th.
Bad ‘Mausam’ For ‘Hum Tum Shabana’

The postponement of release of Mausam to 23rd September was bound to have a chain reaction. The first reaction came in the form of postponement of Hum Tum Shabana. The film has been pushed from 23rd to 30th September. According to Subhash Dawar, producer of Hum Tum Shabana, he postponed his film by a week to avoid clashing with Mausam. “There were other reasons too,” he clarified. “I was never happy about my earlier release date as it fell in the Shradh period when Hindus don’t generally start anything new or auspicious. By postponing the film by a week, I have been able to avoid the Shradh days. Also, I’ll get an additional week to promote my film.”

First Still From Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children Debuts At TIFF

Aren’t Shriya Saran and Satya Bhabha so lovely together???!
Any news from the movie adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children was fully on our TIFF radar this year (other than the unforch cancelled Mausam) and when we saw the first still posted by TIFF on Twitter…we died!
The still was released as director Deepa Mehtaand author Mr Rushdie participated in the Mavericks Conversation series where they discussed the challenges of making the book into a movie including the possibilities of making two movies to do justice to the narrative. Ms Mehta revealed that India is very much humanized in the book/movie while Mr Rushdie concluded that MC is Canadian film as it would’ve been impossible to make without Canadian resources.
Midnight’s Children will be releasing worldwide in October 2012, which gives you plenty of time to buy yourself a copy and get acquainted with the bestseller!

Salman Khan is now Bollywood's top tax payer

Mumbai: Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who just delivered the biggest box office grosser of all time with his latest film 'Bodyguard', has also trumped his rivals in the Hindi filmdom with a near threefold increase in tax payout.
Salman, who has had several run-ins with the law, paid Rs 5 crore in advance tax for the July-September quarter, Income Tax Department sources said today.
In the corresponding period last year, the actor had paid only Rs 2 crore in advance tax. The 45-year-old star has been delivering blockbusters by strategically coinciding their release with Eid for the past two years.

Salman's arch rival Shah Rukh Khan, who has not had any big releases in the recent past, saw his tax outgo remain flat at Rs 5 crore, the sources added.
Akshay Kumar, another big name in Bollywood, is also estimated to have paid Rs 5 crore in advance tax payments, up from Rs 4 crore, they said.
Actor-producer Aamir Khan, whose small-budgeted edgy movie 'Delhi Belly' released this quarter and was received well, saw a Rs 50 lakh rise in advance tax outgo at Rs 4.5crore, they said.
New kid on the block Ranbir Kapoor's advance tax outgo stood at a flat Rs 2.5 crore, the sources said.
Advance tax payment is a system of staggered payment of income taxes so that high tax-paying individuals or firms do not pile up tax liabilities towards the end of the year. The payment for September quarter accounts for 30 per cent of the total collection payout for an individual or company.
In the first quarter it is 15 per cent, followed by 30 per cent each in the next two and 25 per cent in the fourth quarter.
