Bollywood fans declare war on Twitter over which actor is the best

An online war has broken out between Twitter fans of actors Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan, with each claiming their idol to be a bigger star. The bone of contention seems to be an online survey carried by a marketing house recently.

The poll results had Shah Rukh topping it with Salman in the third rung. The poll, which was closely timed with the release of Shah Rukh’s recent release, had the actor topping the poll with actor Hrithik Roshan and Salman coming a close second and third respectively. “A few online forums have denounced the claims, claiming that the results are not accurate as Salman is no way less popular than Hrithik. In fact, Hrithik doesn’t have more followers than Salman,” says an online voter who participated in the poll and was referring to the Twitter following.

An official, however, clarifies that the poll reflect the results to a specific question: ‘Who will be a bigger star in 2015?’ The poll participants were asked to vote for the star, who they think will outrun the others in another four years.

“The result clearly says that Shah Rukh and Hrithik will last longer than Salman in terms of shelf life. The users didn’t vote on who is a bigger star. Also, it must be pointed out here that the results are not based on any research work. The results are based on users who participated in the online poll,” says the official.

Actor Aamir Khan’s name is conspicuously missing from the list as he’s not that active on Twitter. He’s more active on Facebook.

IFFI defers screening of MF Husain documentary

The organizers of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) today deferred the screening of a documentary by legendary painter MF Husain amid protests by a Hindu rights group.

The documentary 'Through the Eyes of a Painter', produced-written and directed by Husain in 1967, was to be screened today under the homage section of the festival.

But the IFFI director Shankar Mohan said they decided to defer the tribute screening, pending legal opinion.

"The petitioners (Hindu Janjagruti Samiti) had said that the matter is subjudice," Mohan said, adding, "We don't want to do anything illegal. We are taking legal opinion."

HJS had threatened to demonstrate at the IFFI venues if the 15-minute documentary was screened at the festival.

Husain, who earned both fame and controversy with his paintings, died in London in June this year at the age of 95.

Produced by the Film Division of India, the documentary was set in Rajasthan and records Husain's impression of the state and its people.

It won the Golden Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Being sexy is... well, sexy, says Kareena Kapoor

Actor Kareena Kapoor is, in her own words, “super-happy” and the excitement is writ large on Bebo’s face too as DNA catches up with the Bolly hottie on the day she kickstarts her new film Heroine. Admitting that this year has been extremely special for her, she reveals that she finds it hard to choose what’s made it most special — her films crossing the Rs100 crore mark, announcement of her marriage next year, her wax statue being installed at Madame Tussauds or the most recent — being voted the sexiest Asian woman. In a quick tete-a-tete, the actor talks about films, marriage plans and reveals what being the sexiest means to her.

Q: You are ending the year on a good note…
A:Not just good, the best in fact (laughs). And that I do each year, as I always end the year and bring in the new one vacationing with Saif (beau, actor Saif Ali Khan) in the Swiss Alps. This year is no different and I can’t wait to take off on that break soon after I finish the Heroine schedule here. It’s the one thing that I most look forward to.

Q: So, the marriage is on for next year?
A: Yes, soon after the release of Agent Vinod. We are yet to finalise the date though, as it would depend on the release date of the film.

    Q: In February, right?
A: Well, I don’t know. It’s more likely to be a March wedding actually. In any case, it’s all undecided yet.

Q: You have been voted the sexiest Asian woman…How does that make you feel?
A: Being sexy is well, sexy! Tags have never meant much, but yes being called sexy is always a compliment that women, including me, love. I had never thought about it, so it came as a surprise and yes, it’s exciting too, after all which woman would not like being called sexy. But the best compliment came from Saif when he said, that I am the sexiest in the world (laughs).

Q: What do you prefer – sexy titles or hit films?
A: Hit films definitely. Sexy titles are only the icing, but the real substance has to be the performance. Call me a 100 crore heroine over sexy any day!

Q: What do you think is the sexiest thing about you?
A: My curves! I think getting them back have made all the difference. But no, seriously, I think in my case it’s impossible to separate the body of work from the body per se (smiles). It’s the personality overall that makes you sexy and that includes your work too na.

Q: Do you think that the recent wax statue installation and now this have put you leagues ahead in the competition?
A: There is no competition! I think each one of us is running our own race, but like I said, more than the tags, my work speaks for itself. And if it’s about number game, then well, I’ll let the numbers at the BO play that game.

Amitabh Bachchan plans charity for cops' families

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who lent his baritone voice for the album "Sounds of Peace", is planning a charity concert to raise funds to help the families of police officials killed while serving the country.

"There will be a concert in a couple of months and all those that contributed to the album 'Sounds of Peace' shall perform for the charity," the 69-year-old posted on micro-blogging site Twitter.

"The charity shall be for all those police families that lost loved ones, who have no means of existence - ignored and forgotten. Men from the forces, who sacrificed their lives so we could live peacefully. Tremendous courage and duty towards their vocation," he said.

"...And our thoughts and prayers go for all those families of the force who gave up their lives so we could live in peace," he posted.

On the third anniversary of the 26/11, music composer Aadesh Srivastava launched his album "Sound of Peace", an initiative that talks about peace and co-existence of all communities.

Akon, Ustad Rashid Khan and Wyclef Jean have been roped in to lent their voices for the album.

"...It is quite remarkable that Aadesh has been able to convince stalwarts such as Akon and VanCleef and the London Philharmonic Orchestra to lend support and talent and creativity to this music concept," Big B posted on his blog bigb.bigadda.com.

    Saif, Kareena: No-kissing policy

Denies reports of kissing scenes with Deepika in upcoming film. Says Bebo and he have decided against puckering up with co-stars

Saif Ali Khan is unhappy with reports claiming he has smooched co-star Deepika Padukone in Race 2. Apparently, there are no kissing scenes in the film and Saif is wondering where these stories have originated from.

Says a source close to the actor, "During the release of their last film Aarakshan, there was buzz that Saif and Deepika had become very fond of each other. Now with Race 2 around the corner, everyone's talking about the kissing scene. Saif wants to nip these rumours in the bud. He even plans to talk to Deepika about it."

Interestingly, we hear that about a year ago Saif and Kareena Kapoor had decided they wouldn't do kissing scenes in their films and even made their decision clear to filmmakers. Adds the source, "With marriage imminent early next year, they don't want any controversies. Even in the case of Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine, Kareena has made it clear that she won't do kissing scenes. For Race 2, Saif had communicated the same to directors Abbas-Mustaan."

Khan confirms to BT, "There are no kissing scenes in Race 2." His spokesperson adds, "Kareena and Saif had decided on a no-kissing policy sometime ago."

Strangely though, all parties associated with the film confirm that there are indeed intimate scenes between Saif and Deepika. Which is confounding because aren't intimate scenes a step ahead of kissing scenes? So then, does the pact between the Nawab and his to-be-Begum make sense?

Perhaps Himesh Reshammiya will see the irony in this situation because the lines from his song Umrao Jaan, which go something like, "No kissing, no kissing... only seeing, only seeing!' completely defines the above situation!

Deepika: I was very keen on being an actor

Deepika Padukone talks to Mirror readers, twins Preeti and Rati Parwani, about her foray into films, highs and lows and her bond with badminton

In the middle of a whirlwind promotion tour of her much-hyped, Desi Boyz, we catch the leggy actress Deepika Padukone for a quick tete-a-tete with her ardent fans, Pune-based twins Preeti and Rati Parwani. Hard to tell that they are even related, the two came buzzing with excitement, looking forward to meeting their favourite actress. "She's so pretty, we've seen all her films," gushed 21-year-old Preeti. After a substantial wait, Deepika welcomed us into a small meeting room in an entertainment channel's office where she was busy giving interviews.

Dressed in a fitted sequined cocktail dress, high heels and hair and make-up to boot, in the middle of the afternoon, seemed a little disorienting but did justice to her toned figure. Greeting us with a warm smile, she towered above everyone.

The star-struck twins started, "You look beautiful. How crazy has the promotion schedule been like?" With a smile and an exasperated expression said, "It's absolutely manic. Yesterday we started our day in Chandigarh, took a charter plane to Ludhiana, made it to Amritsar by road before finally heading home.

I optimistically called my trainer and told her I'll come in at 9 am. But I barely made it out of bed. Sometimes it's relaxed, but sometimes many things need to be packed in into a month or two."

"Which films did you really enjoy?" Deepika asked. "OSO and Break Ke Baad was our favourite," they said almost in unison. The girls wanted to know how she felt debuting with Shah Rukh. "I was stunned. I first met Farah while she was rehearsing for a song. She said, 'Lets see how you do. The lead actor is SRK.' She had only seen me in a Himesh (Reshamiya) video before then. At the time Shah Rukh was working on Chak de!, so I had a year to prepare.

Once I knew it was him, I didn't want any other role, so I really worked hard. I took Kathak classes, worked out. I remember the first time I met him, Farah took me to his house, and now things have changed, but back then, everything was white. White sofa, curtains... and I in total Yash Chopra style, wore a white chicken suit with a chiffon dupatta, and tried to camouflage myself. I pretended to be really cool, so I started flipping a book, but I was freaking out.

I sat stiff as a board," she said, laughing. Rati asked her how she felt being called the hottest girl on earth. Deepika replied nonchalantly, "It's nice to hear that but I'm not very conscious about it."

"How and why did you switch from being a sportswoman to an actor?" asked Preeti. "I was very keen on being an actor. If I saw Madhuri dance around in Switzerland, I liked to believe I could do it too. I wasn't fanatic about it; I wouldn't practise in front of a mirror. So when the opportunity presented itself, I took it. But I'm very attached to sports.

I grew up going for practice everyday at 5 am, for four hours a day. Now that I feel like I have some influence, I like to support sports as much as possible," she said. As they wrapped up, Rati asked, "Would you head to Hollywood?" Deepika replied, "I would like to, but offers here are so good that they really need to match up."

    I don’t need a Danny Boyle: Bappi

Today, Bappi Lahiri turns 59 and plans to bring in his birthday quietly. “We’ll have a party later to celebrate the success of The Dirty Picture,” he says, ecstatic that his song ‘Oo la la…’ is topping the charts. “Back in the 1980s, I had 12 jubilee hits in a year-and-a-half. This song is in

the same-Jeetendra-Sridevi Mawwali style and after the recording I had told the composers Vishal-Shekhar, that we had created a superhit.

But I had never imagined that it would sprint ahead in three weeks, faster than last year’s ‘Sheila…’ and ‘Munni…’,” he admits. The composer, who has sung for several actors from Vinod Khanna (‘Bambai se aaya mera dost…’ from Aap Ki Khatir, 1977) and Amitabh Bachchan (Raat baaki… from Namak Halal, 1982) to Sanjay Dutt (Tamma tamma… from Thanedaar, 1990) and John Abraham (Bambai nagariya…’ from Taxi No. 9211, 2006), is thrilled by the response to ‘Oo la la…’

“People still like my voice. Recently at a show in Kolkata I had to sing it three times,” he beams, pointing out that his jazz album, Walking On Love Street, is on CMJ’s Top 5 New World Adds Chart and and WONY Oneonta, New York — Top Ten Jazz Playlist Week. “My song with American Idol winner Shaun Barrows is playing in 38 radio stations, and also hotels, airplanes and stores.”

Walking On Love Street that has Diana Williams as Bappi’s co-lyricist, Doron Zor on the guitar and features five-time Grammy nominee Jeff Lorber. It was recorded at Hollywood’s Rusk Studios, with the acoustics, including sitar, flute and santoor recorded in India with Bappi himself on the tabla. The album is dedicated to his wife Chitrani, who he met at a recording studio. “I was 23 with just three films to my credit, Zakhmi Aurat (198, Chalte Chalte (1976) and Aap Ki Khatir. She was 19. It was love-at-first sight and I told my parents that this was the girl I wanted to marry. We came home in a car and then on a whim, went walking down love street. We’re still there,” he smiles.

With 462 films to his credit, Bappi who completes four decades in the industry, points out that he’s won many awards and celebrated many jubilees. But this is the first time that two of his songs are topping the charts, in India and abroad at the same time. “It’s a rare feat for any musician and I didn’t need a Danny Boyle to boost me. I did it on my own with an album I produced, composed, wrote and sang for,” he points out. “For years, people have been calling me a copy cat, but these are original. RD Burman, Shankar-Jaikishen and I were merely ‘inspired’. Today’s music directors just take songs from every country and simply ‘chaapo’ (produce) them under their own names.”
