Dev Anand's prayer meeting at Mehboob Studios

Tinsel townies, people from the media and fans thronged Mehboob Studios to bid the evergreen star a final goodbye

He shot most of his films in Mehboob Studios. Within these walls remain till date, his personal makeup room. And so, when the evergreen romantic Dev Anand breathed his last, the studio authorities requested his family to hold the prayer meeting within the studio walls.

The studio cancelled every shoot, every booking on Friday December 16, 2011, to accommodate Dev sahab's leading ladies, co-stars, followers and the zillions of fans and media people on the evening dedicated to him.

His leading ladies Waheeda Rahman, Simi Garewal, Zeenat Aman and even Tina Munim came in early to bid their hero a final goodbye. Tabu was however, the first one to reach the venue. And though we missed spotting Shah Rukh Khan and Salman, Aamir came in and stayed till the end.

Abhishek Bachchan, Fardeen Khan, Ashutosh Gowariker, Shekhar Kapur, Vinod Khanna, Mani Ratnam and Ramesh Sippy were among the others who came to offer their prayer to the star. The Kapoor brothers Randhir, Rajiv and Rishi came together for the occasion. The late Shammi Kapoor's son Aditya Raj Kapoor joined them.

    Not in Step

    Pappu Can’t Dance Saala

    DIRECTOR: Saurabh Shukla

CAST: Vinay Pathak, Neha Dhupia, Rajat Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah

    Rating: **

Pappu is what fresh-off-the-train Vidyadhar Acharya gets called by brash Mumbai girl Mehak Malvade. Pappu is an omnibus word, and can be used in an affectionate manner, specially when addressing young boys. But when Mehak says “Pappu”, she means an amalgam of duffer plus fool plus loser. She could very well have used Lallu instead, but she wouldn’t know how, would she?

Vidyadharji (Pathak) has done nothing to earn that sobriquet, other than being his Banarasi Babu self. Which means being resentful of puri aloo made differently at a Mumbai stall (aloo ki subzi mein kadi patta!), taking himself off to sleep at 11 pm (gyarah baje main sota hoon!), and being respectful of women (dekhiye, gaali mat dijiye!). Ms Malvade (Dhupia) is the cheese to his chalk. Blowing large gum bubbles, wearing very skimpy clothes, hustling to stay on top, she is a troupe dancer with an eye on the main chance.

It’s not that I have difficulty in buying the attraction between these two opposites. Stranger and odder couples have got it on, because no one knows what does it for two people. But I had trouble keeping myself interested because of the film’s flatness, despite some nice touches.

These are actors used to playing with each other, but sometimes that comfort can result in a film like this, which has a good idea at its heart, but gets weighed down with an unimpressionable arc. Pathak’s Mr Nice Irascible Guy is a part he can by now play with his eyes closed, though he’s much more palatable here than when he was teaching the too-immaculate Lara Dutta how to negotiate a country road in Chalo Dilli. It’s always fun watching Rajat Kapoor; you wish he was given more to do with his big-haired crack choreographer plus hard-edged-soft-hearted mentor. Neha Dhupia is more effective in smaller, sharper roles: here she is spread too thin, leaving us for longer with her limitations.

Audiences calling shots these days: Neha Dhupia

Bollywood is no longer restricted to romantic comedies or action dramas. There is scope for all kinds of cinema and this is possible because of the audiences, says Neha Dhupia.

"What's creating more dhoom is the audience. It's so nice these days that we can do any kind of film because the audience is not ready for stereotypes," said the 31-year-old actress.

"Whether you do a 'Delhi Belly', or a 'Dirty Picture' or a 'Pappu Can't Dance Saala' or 'Mission Impossible 4' - there is an audience for everything. The only thing that's causing dhoom in the industry is a good script, and then... the audience decides," she added.

Neha's new film "Pappu Can't Dance Saala" has just hit the screens.

Meanwhile, be it Vidya Balan or Kareena Kapoor - Bollywood's 30-plus actresses have been lately stealing the thunder

Neha feels age is irrelevant when it comes to quality work.

"I think age has got nothing to do with it... Whether you're 20, 30 or 40. It all depends on the kind of cinema you are doing," said Neha at the Gillette Saluting Soldier event here.

Neha made her Bollywood debut with the action flick "Qayamat: City Under Threat" and later did a mix of commercial and off-beat films. She was last seen in "Gandhi To Hitler".

Controversy queen Veena Malik goes missing

Pakistani starlet Veena Malik who was to feature in NDTV Imagine's Swayamvar 4 has gone missing from her Mumbai residence.
Veena's manager Prateik Mehta reportedly revealed that the actor-comedian is untraceable since the morning of December 16. Last heard, Veena was shooting for a horror flick Mumbai 125 kilometres in Mumbai.
The film's director said that he received a text message from Malik saying that she was unwell and depressed. The police has been informed but are yet to register a formal complaint in the matter.
Malik, a former Bigg Boss contestant, has been facing death threats from banned militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) for allegedly posing nude for FHM magazine's cover, wearing only an ISI tattoo. "She has made fun of all Muslim women and brought shame to the entire nation," said a Lahore-based member of the group who identified himself as Abu Usama. "Veena Malik will be dealt with accordingly on her return to Pakistan. Our 'faithful' are prepared to welcome her," Usama said. Prominent cleric Maulana Abdul Qawi, 69, also warned of a fatwa against Veena for bringing a bad name to Islam. "She has shamed all Muslims," Qawi said.
Veena shot to limelight last year when she accused her then boyfriend Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif of indulging in match fixing. Veena had also testified against Asif before the International Cricket Council.
A few months later, Veena was one of the contestants in the Indian reality show Bigg Boss 4 where she provoked extremists in Pakistan by wearing shorts, hugging an Indian actor and swimming with former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson. Earlier this year, she baited clerics in Pakistan by asking for women to be freed from wearing the burqa and an end to honour killings.

Veena is not the only case of missing actress. Ten months ago Laila Khan, who starred in 2008-release Wafaa, mysteriously disappeared along with her family. Khan was last spotted in Kashmir where a car belonging to her was found abandoned.
Rakhi Sawant's director brother Rakesh who had launched Laila in Wafaa had reported the case to the Oshiwara police.
Rakesh learnt that a Laila's father, Nadir Shah, had already lodged a missing persons' complaint at the police station in August. Instead of enquiring about his family's whereabouts, he instead pressed the police to transfer the posession of Laila's Mumbai house to him. Incidentally, Nadir Shah has been separated from his family since 2006. To complicate matters, an unknown man was also residing in Laila's Mumbai flat who her mother claimed was Laila's husband.
With the growing number of loopholes in the case, and the father being a prime suspect, the Mumbai police has sprung into action.
"We got info that they (Laila Khan and her family) have moved to Tanzania. We have launched a search in which mobile records of all 4 members, we will trace out their location," said a policemen from the Oshiwara station.
