Amitabh is like a true soldier: Arjun Rampal

Mumbai: Actor Arjun Rampal, who was last seen in 'RA.One', is not only in awe of Amitabh Bachchan as an actor but also as a person and describes him as a true soldier who has braved storms in his life to come out with more passion and creativeness.
"For me, the true soldier really is a person like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who has nothing but love for what he does, nothing but complete endurance... he has endured everything -- the ups, the downs and everything, and still keeps coming out and recreating himself," the 39-year-old actor said here at the Gillette Saluting Soldier.
Arjun, who has worked with Amitabh in 'Aaakhen' and 'The Last Lear', loves the way Big B keeps re-inventing himself even at the age of 69.

"He is one of those actors who never created a shelf life for himself. An actor who reinvents himself all the time and is still there and still doing some wonderful work even at his age. He is such a good brand ambassador of the Indian film industry to the world... a true soldier," Arjun said.
Arjun feels that Amitabh's discipline should be a source of inspiration for budding actors.
"He is a man who wakes up at 6 a.m. and this is a discipline. This is something we should all learn. He is in the gym at 7 a.m. At around 8-8:30, he has a stack of newspapers which go all around the world, and he reads every single newspaper. At 9:30, he is on the set, he switches his mobile phone off, and he is the character you want him to be," Arjun said.
"I was always intimidated by him, but he also taught me that your best friends when you are shooting a film should be your team members -- your co-stars, directors, cameramen and lightmen," added the actor who was also seen in "Rascals".
He is next big movie is Madhur Bhandarkar's mega-budget 'Heroine', which has Kareena Kapoor in the lead.

The After Hrs Review: Jo Hum Chahein

Jo Hum Chahein is a fairly simple love story and will waltz with you on the been-there, seen-it-all familiar territory of the genre. Rohan (Sunny) is a fresh MBA graduate, ambitious to the core and hungry to get to the top. The only things that match up to his good looks are his cockiness and overconfidence. Neha (Simran), on the other hand, is a simple girl who wants to make it big in the modelling world. A spiritual date later (yes, he takes her from a temple to a church to a Gurudwara on their first date), Neha falls for exactly the same cockiness that she found irksome on meeting him for the first time.

The hero’s cockiness is irritating, and what’s even more irritating is seeing a supposedly level-headed heroine fall for it. All is still well. But wait, it’s not even interval yet. So, there’s Rohan’s boss (Alyy Khan), who in the guise of helping Rohan realise his dreams, is actually using him to further his own prospects. Soon Rohan finds himself becoming a toyboy to a rich client (Achint), who is in cahoots with Alyy. All hell breaks loose when Neha finds out about the ‘aunty’ in Rohan’s life and what follows right till the end is as anyone’s guess.

Debutant director Pawan Gill comes from the school of Yash Chopra’s style of filmmaking, having assisted Aditya on his films. Typically, there’s a party song, a warring song between the hero and the heroine, a love song, and a heartbreak song, all shot beautifully, but once again it’s nothing that you haven’t seen before. All the songs have an aesthetic flair, but wish the director had gotten his team to work on everything that came in between too. The storyline is the same old stuff. The scenes predictable. Sunny and Simran are strictly okay in their debuts, though both need to work on their dialogue-delivery. The juvenile dialogues that they are given to mouth make it worse for them.

The supporting actors do impressive jobs though. The only saving grace is the fresh appeal that the film has. But overall, the film just fails to lift and you can’t wait for the film to get over after a certain point.

Low key wedding for Riteish Deshmukh-Genelia D’Souza

With the incessant public glare on their wedding, the soon-to-be-couple have apparently madea few alterations in their wedding plans. Both actors, Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza have decided to make their wedding a very private affair moving away from an opulent public marriage ceremony.

The Deshmukh family — one of the most powerful political families of Maharashtra — is apparently pruning the guest list and slashing the budget. According to sources, the wedding will be a private affair and only people close to both Desmukh and D’Souza families will be invited. There will be a reception bash however efforts are being made to tone down the budget.

Even Riteish admitted that he wouldn’t like his wedding to be a public spectacle.

“Things will happen when they have to happen. But I would like to keep my entire wedding plan under personal space and I hope it will be remain that way eventually,” he said.

The duo will soon be seen in a movie together soon but Genelia, who is very busy with her shooting schedules and dubbing, hasn’t been able to make time for the promotions yet.

“Genelia will soon join Riteish for the promotions and then they will talk about the film and also about their marriage. Right now, both the families have agreed that they don’t want a very public wedding and that the guest list will be kept limited. The wedding, as the couple wants, should be kept limited to 1,000 people and not more than that. Considering the clout of the Deshmukh family, it is a very low figure. However, there will be separate invites sent out for separate functions,” the source added.

Is Bollywood finally bold and sexy?


Bollywood is coming out of the closet. Bold depictions and taboo topics have suddenly become common on the big screen as well as on TV. What was considered forbidden so long is becoming saleable subject and being served as entertainment.
Male strippers, sperm donors, extra-marital sex, the casting couch, free use of cuss words and the middle finger, and exploited starlets suddenly comprise themes in commercial Bollywood. While it is still understandable if going bold is a part of the big screen masala, the Indian middle class audience got a shock when porn star Sunny Leone entered the reality show Bigg Boss 5. On the big screen, use of expletive, double innuendos and objectionable gestures - till now avoided by filmmakers or underplayed on screen - are suddenly considered to be ways of expression.
"The audience wants to look beyond regular entertainment that they have been getting for years. We cannot let several interesting issues remain hidden under the carpet simply because these issues are bold," says Milan Luthria, director of The Dirty Picture, a film that grossed it big by unabashedly projecting the life of eighties sex bomb Silk Smitha.
"It is not that only showbiz has gone bold. Society at large has developed a rather daring approach towards life. People in their day-to-day life now openly discuss what was taboo in the past and this is the reason that films are being made on such themes," says Prahlad Kakkar, adfilmmaker and image consultant. "For how long will the audience watch cliched symbolism like two roses coming together or two birds flying? Filmmakers have to explore bold themes boldly so that the audience is amused and entertained."
Luthria's The Dirty Picture openly discussed sleaze behind the glitter in showbiz through Silk's life story. Vidya Balan's bold portrayal of a village girl's ambitious shortcut to the top was widely appreciated by the masses. On screen, Vidya, known so far for her demure image, shocked the audience with her dare-bare act as Silk Smitha. The success of the film proves the audience is willing to accept bold themes.
On the other hand, Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, image-conscious superstars, surprised all with their performances as strippers Rohit Dhawan's Desi Boyz. The film highlights how two London-based Indians lose their jobs in the time of recession and are forced to take up jobs as male escorts in a nightclub. Bollywood hunks Akshay and John strip down to innerwear only to be cheered by the stinking rich women guests at the club.
Sperm donation is another issue that was avoided by filmmakers till now. In Onir's episodic film, I Am, one of the segments has Purab Kohli playing a young boy who makes a living as a sperm donor. The story shows how a single woman played by Nandita Das approaches the donor.
Elsewhere, veejay Ayusshman Khurana makes his Bollywood debut with Vicky Donor, where he plays a budding cricketer who becomes a sperm donor to earn a few extra bucks.
Thanks to moral policing, filmmakers till recently were wary of what they showed on screen. This included the use of language in the dialogues. However, a change in the trend was noticed this year with Delhi Belly, Bhindi Baazaar Inc. and No One Killed Jessica, where cuss words were liberally used.
The Aamir Khan-produced Delhi Belly, fast emerging as a cult film, was promoted as an adult comedy where the use of colloquial urban language was considered natural because that's how our youth speak nowadays.
"Delhi Belly is an accurate take on the youth of today. If you are making a film describing the modern urban youth then you can't be showing them as ideal virginal kids in designer clothes, who don't do anything bad or wrong," said Imran Khan, the fil's hero at the time of the release.
The change is not just restricted to language. The middle finger has emerged as a popular gesture for a range of expressions.
In Rockstar, Ranbir Kapoor expresses aggression showing the finger to a crowd. In No One Killed Jessica, the finger is Rani Mukerji's way of saying she doesn't give a damn about life. Sonam Kapoor is seen showing the finger at the camera in a promo of the upcoming Players, as a gesture of going one-up in a certain situation. Hrithik Roshan was seen making a similar gesture in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.
Rockstar director Imtiaz Ali was clear that Ranbir's finger action is "bold" for the Indian mindset but was necessary "to show the point of view of a rebel".
While the finger fetish has caught on, the censors really drew the line on Sonam's gesture in Players when Abbas-Mustan, makers of the film, tried showing the scene in the television promos. The scene has since then been blurred in the television promos.
It is not just films, even television - widely considered a medium for the middle class family audience - is going no-holds barred. There is now a slot after 11 pm for adult content. Colors channel readily made use of the late timing by introducing porn star Sunny Leone in Bigg Boss 5. While the housemates were not told who Sunny really is, the PR machinery of the show ensured the press was supplied with enough information to let the audience know what her real calling is.
As Sunny went pole dancing on the show, the TRPs of the show increased - proving the viewership was indeed interested. Google searches and downloads of content featuring Sunny have gone up, and the middle class has accepted watching a godman and a porn star on the same show.
"Gone are the days when showbiz had to be politically correct. The fact that such efforts are yielding good business proves the audience has started to enjoy mature subjects that were till now referred to in hushed tones," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.
Although the audience has been enjoying such content, a counter argument is that these are quickfix attempts to draw the crowds. "Bold themes need to be dealt with a lot of creativity and finesse. Failing this, the attempt can become cheap and gross. The focus should be on combining creativity with entertainment," adds Adarsh.
Very few in Bollywood have successfully dealt with bold subjects in the past. For instance, Dev Anand's Guide openly depicted extra-marital love way back in 1965. Anand was also among the earliest actor-filmmakers to deal with drugs in Hare Rama Hare Krishna in 1971. Yash Chopra presented Waheeda Rahman as a woman who abandons her daughter from a pre-marital relationship in his 1976 film, Kabhie Kabhie. Chopra also faintly touched on incest in his 1991 film, Lamhe. These however were rare instances. Mainstream Bollywood seems to be growing up only now.

MP fifth in Sunny Leone voyeurism

Indore: Sunny Leone, the sizzling porn-star, whose explosive entry in the Big Boss reality show last month had millions of Indian hearts pulsating, was googled across Madhya Pradesh extensively.

However, MP lost in the race for Leone -voyeurism to J& K, Delhi, Orissa and Haryana. Nonetheless, the latest statistics of Google suggest that the porn star was accessed on web across the state, in towns both small and big.

Gwalior topped in search for Sunny Leone on the web in the last 90 days. It was followed by Jabalpur. Bhopal and Indore were fifth and sixth in the web search of Leone.

However, Bhopal was on top in searching provocative images of the porn star followed by Indore.

The searches were registered on and after November 18 when entry of Sunny Leone in the Big Boss was announced in media. Netizens in Madhya Pradesh googled most on November 22 to look for Sunny Leone on web. On this day she officially entered the Big Boss house.

Hollywood Scores Over Bollywood, Yet Again

It was once again Hollywood which scored over Bollywood this week at the box-office. Of course, that was expected because Hollywood boasted of a big release – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol and its dubbed Hindi version, Mission: Impossible – Gupt Vidhaan – whereas Bollywood brought medium-budget fares like Jo Hum Chahein, Pappu Can’t Dance Saala and Faraar.

The big one from Bollywood, Don 2, will release next week and it is expected to shake the box-office in the opening weekend, at least.

Salman Khan Fans Vs Shah Rukh Khan Fans

Recently we posted two articles by our fans, both of whom claim to be Shah Rukh Khan fans. While both the authors tried their best not to take sides, the response by fans of Shah Rukh and Salman Khan took us aback. None of the authors insulted either of the stars and they were quite fair in their own right. It seems that fans of both the stars have taken it that if someone supports Salman, he/she HAS to be against Shah Rukh, and vice versa.
