Film stars and their fans

Movies have a great impact on society in India, with crazy fan followings for big stars. But while fans are willing to follow their favorites wherever they lead, where exactly are the stars leading their fans?

In Tamil films, Rajnikanth has done a lot to help ordinary people, through his charitable trust. In Telugu films, Chiranjeevi started a blood bank and an eye bank, again through his charitable trust. In both cases, the stars issued a call, and their fans responded in droves.

In Hindi films, the emphasis has always been much more on glamor than in other language films, and perhaps this rubs off on the stars, too. But, while many stars lend their names to this or that charity, and they do come together to raise funds for major calamities like the tsnami, there hasn't been anyone who has prompted his or her fans to emulate them in good works. Or so I thought.

Recently, though, I came across a website (salmanmania.com) which describes a novel way some fans of Salman Khan's celebrated his birthday. Unbidden and unsolicited, these fans decided to pool together contributions from among themselves and send Rs.50,000 to the Salman Khan Foundation, which was set up to help people with extreme medical problems requiring expensive treatment. In addition, they sent a further amount to the St. Anthony's Age Care Home in Mumbai, which is sponsored by Salman Khan.

A little research showed that Salman Khan has a long history of helping individuals and organizations, through personal time commitment, monetary donations, and acting as a spokesperson to raise funds on their behalf. Now he has set up this foundation to organize these charitable efforts in a more systematic fashion. He has not issued any widespread appeals, either to his fans or anyone else, so it is all the more noteworthy that these fans should have taken this action on their own. They do say that they have been inspired by Salman Khan's example.

It's nice to see a star who is leading his fans on the path to good works, and not just fashions and fads. Let's hope more fans follow this example.

Akshay Kumar and Shahrukh Khan are on a dream run at the boxoffice. Both actors are giving consecutive outright hits like very few before them.

Akshay Kumar is on five consecutive outright hits with Bhagam Bhag, Namastey London, Heyy Babyy, Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Welcome.

Shahrukh Khan has a run of four consecutive outright winners starting with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and then followed by Don, Chak De India and Om Shanti Om.

The star they trail is Rajendra Kumar who gave a record six consecutive hits starting in late 1963 till 1966. The films were Mere Mehboob, Zindagi, Sangam, Aaye Milan Ki Bela, Arzoo and Suraj. Both Akshay and Shahrukh have chances of matching this record or even amazingly surpassing this 40 year old record.

Akshay has Tashan and Singh Is King as his next releases while Shahrukh Khan will most likely star in untitled ventures from Dharma Productions and Yashraj Films.

The blockbuster of 2007 Chak De India was revived at Ashok cinema, Patna in Bihar on Friday due to public demand.

Chak De India ran for seven weeks at the same Ashok cinema in Patna when first released in August. Infact Chak De India was the longest running film in Patna of 2007 although Welcome may surpass it in time.

The success of Chak De India is surprising in Bihar as films with more commercially appealing content tend to do well in the circuit.

Chak De India managed business of about 40 lakhs nett with only 7 prints in play over 8 weeks. The other critically acclaimed film Taare Zameen Par has not been released in Bihar yet.

2.Shahrukh Khan-With two Blockbusters in Om Shanti Om and Chak De India it looked like King Khan would have been top in 2007 but Welcome right at the end of 2007 gave a slight edge to Akshay Kumar.

3.Salman Khan-Huge success with Partner. The poor business of delayed Marigold and Saawariya which sees him in a special appreance do not affect his solid position.

4.Aamir Khan-Scored with Taare Zameen Par right at the end of 2007.

5.Shahid Kapur-Jab We Met is another huge hit after Vivah in 2006. His other release Fool N Final manages coverage in a few circuits.

3.Katrina Kaif-Is the lucky mascot of the industry. Welcome, Partner, Namstey London and Apne are all winners but apart from Namastey London the roles are small.

4.Deepika Padukone-A great start with Blockbuster Om Shanti Om and expected to be a big star.

5.Aishwarya Rai-Has a hit in Guru but the heroine orientated Provoked is a big dud.
