    REDKNAPP HINTS AT CITY SWOOPS

Harry Redknapp has hinted that he could look to Manchester City in his bid to strengthen the Tottenham squad without spending too much, although he has played down talk of a move for Stephen Ireland.

The Spurs manager has been thwarted in his pursuit of some transfer targets this summer, with Joe Cole opting to join Liverpool and West Ham rejecting an offer for Scott Parker.

Redknapp is still looking to bring in reinforcements but does not necessarily believe that he has to splash major cash.

He therefore doubts whether Spurs would be able to afford Ireland, who has been linked with a move to White Hart Lane from Man City.

Redknapp does, however, believe that Eastlands could be the place to shop for some bargains before the transfer deadline.

City need to trim their squad to get down to 25 before the start of September and may be prepared to loan out a number of players.

"I just need a couple of fresh faces that would make the difference," Redknapp said in The People.

"One or two walk through the door and it gives everybody a lift. I hoped Joe Cole would have done that if he'd come here but I think there are one or two out there who would do the same - maybe from Manchester City.

"I reckon there's two or three players out there where you don't have to spend any real money on. I think there will be a lot of loans about, because teams are going to loan people out just to get them off the wage bill.

"City look like they might have to do that with one or two because they've got a big squad so it will be interesting.

"Stephen Ireland would cost too much. I like him but he is expensive at 11million or 12million.

"We wouldn't be in a position to spend that much on him, it would be a problem."

As well as mulling over his transfer options, Redknapp is facing a major dilemma over the fitness of key defender Ledley King.

The England international is struggling with his ongoing knee problem ahead of the start of the new season and Redknapp is not willing to take any risks.

The Spurs boss admits he may have to leave King out of the Premier League opener against Manchester City to ensure he is ready for the first leg of the Champions League qualifier a few days later.

"The start of the season is a real problem - just look at Ledley. I'm either going to play him in Europe or in the league," Redknapp explained.

"We start with Man City which is a big opening game so do I play him against Man City or do I play him in the Champions League?

"At the moment Jonathan Woodgate is struggling, Ledley's come back but his knee's not great, so we've got to be careful.

"That Champions League qualifier is massive for us now. We've worked hard to get there and we want to get into the group stages otherwise all the good work we put in last season won't count for anything.

"If Ledley is fit the chances are I'll save him for that because those two qualifying games are now the bigger games for us."

I Would Love Cesc Fabregas To Come To Barcelona - Lionel Messi

Barcelona wizard Lionel Messi has publicly stated his desire to link up with Cesc Fabregas at the Camp Nou next season.

The long-running transfer saga regarding the Arsenal midfielders potential switch to the Blaugrana shows no sign of reaching a resolution, with the English side showing no intention to sell, but the Primera Division champions continue to state their desire to bring the Spaniard back to Catalunya.

Messi arrived in Barcelona airport on Saturday evening to meet up with his colleagues prior to the clubs upcoming tour of Asia, and Spanish publication Sport quoted from TV channel Cuatro that Messi stated he would relish playing alongside Fabregas next season.

He said, It is no secret that Cesc [Fabregas] is my friend. He knows everyone, and I would like him to sign for Barcelona.

I want Cesc to come. I hope the issue can eventually be resolved and that Cesc can be a Barcelona player.

The 23-year old also added that he was suitably refreshed after his exploits at the World Cup with Argentina, and is looking forward to returning to club duties.

He claimed, I am very rested after my holidays, and eager to get to work as soon as possible with my team-mates.

Finally, Messi was coy when discussing Jose Mourinhos Real Madrid, insisting that Barcelona are only concerned with their own performances, and not those of their rival.

He concluded, We have to rely only on our own work, and our abilities, and not worry what anyone else says."

Manchester United midfielder Anderson in car crash

    GettyImages

Manchester United midfielder Anderson has been involved in a car crash in Portugal and was pulled from the wreckage moments before it burst into flames, according to reports.
Anderson is reported to have spent hours in hospital after the crash, which occured at around 7am on a rural road in Braga, but sustained only minor injuries.
The Guardian quoting local sources, claim that the 22-year-old had spent the night at the Sardinha Biba nightclub before leaving in a 125,000 Audi R8 and witnesses say he was pulled ''lifeless'' from the wreckage before it went up in flames.
The paper also claims that two companions - a man known as Victor, and a young Brazilian woman, whose details have not been released - were also involved in the accident and were taken to St Mark's hospital to be treated for concussion, whiplash and shock. "They had only minor injuries," a hospital spokesman, Roman Fresco, said.
Anderson ruptured his cruciate ligament in February and has been out of action ever since. The Portuguese press quoted the Gestifute agency, which represents Anderson, as saying the Brazilian would now return to Manchester to continue his rehabilitation after suffering an "almighty scare".

'I'm at the best club' - Fernando Torres..

After arriving back to Melwood as a World Cup winner, Fernando Torres sat down with Liverpoolfc.tv to discuss his new manager, the arrival of Joe Cole and his dreams of taking the Reds back to the top of English football.

First of all Fernando, congratulations on winning the World Cup - have you had a good summer?
Yes, as you can imagine it was an amazing day for Spaniards all over the world. Winning the World Cup happens maybe once in your life so it was a fantastic feeling and a great way to end the season. I have had a break over the summer and I'm now glad to be back here at Liverpool to see all of my teammates.
We know you picked up an injury in the World Cup final. How are you feeling now, are you fit and ready to go again?
Yes, I am looking forward to the first game. I have less than two weeks to get ready but I felt really good in my first session back with the physios and the doctor. I will try to be fit as soon as possible and I am looking forward to playing at Anfield again.
We know it's hard work early in pre-season, but are you enjoying being back around your teammates again?
Of course. After a nice break enjoying the summer with my family I was looking forward to coming back to Melwood to see the staff, my teammates and the new players. I'm excited about the new season and about the targets of the club.
We obviously have a new manager now who you met in Spain. How impressed are you with Roy Hodgson's plans for the club and how much are you looking forward to working with him?
I really appreciated the fact that Roy came out to see me while I was on my holidays. He told me about his plans for the club and what he wanted from me and I appreciated that. I hope he will be the right man to reach the targets of Liverpool Football Club and I am really looking forward to working with him. At the moment I am training just on my own but as soon as I can I will train with the team and with the new manager.
Steven Gerrard has already said he is looking forward to the new season, Joe Cole has arrived and made his debut at the weekend - how excited are you about the future here at Liverpool?
I was talking to Stevie a lot today and I also met with Joe. I think Joe is exactly the kind of player we need to improve the history of our club. We are keeping our best players and so it's nice to be back with them. Hopefully we can play together as soon as possible.
How excited were you when you heard Joe Cole was signing for Liverpool?
He is the kind of player I like to play with and the kind of player who can take the team to a higher level. His passing is unbelievable so hopefully he can start the season well because I am sure he will be a key player for us.
Joe has said he's looking forward to creating a lot of chances and a lot of goals for you this season...
Hopefully that will be the case. I'm excited about playing with him and hopefully we can all help him settle into the team and the city to make sure he can reach his best as quickly as possible. It's up to us to help the new players.
What are your personal targets this season and what do you think Liverpool can achieve?
This is the best club in the country so the targets and expectations are always high. Hopefully we can stay at our level. At Liverpool the aim is to fight for every title. It was difficult last season but we are sure we can improve this season. I am really happy to be back, really happy to stay with all my teammates. My commitment and loyalty to the club and to the fans is the same as it was on my first day when I signed. I am looking forward to the challenge ahead.
Why does this club mean so much to you?
From my first day I got the same welcome as Stevie or Carra or players who have been here for a long time. I felt at home from the first day, I feel the fans love me and everyone knows I am really happy here and really happy to play at Anfield. As I said earlier, I'm looking forward to starting the season and playing with my teammates and for the fans.
Is the dream to score the goals which wins trophies for this club?
Of course. I know that one trophy here at Liverpool - maybe the Premier League - means more than three or four with another club. This was my target from the day I came and it's still my target. Hopefully this season we can feel this sensation here at Liverpool.
