Ligue 1 round-up: PSG fall to surprise defeat, as Lille and Marseille both fail to win

Lille and Marseille both fail to win their matches, as PSG lose to Lorient leaving Montpellier and Lyon atop the table with new boys Evian announing their arrival in a goal-fest

    Marseille 2-2 FC Sochaux
Marseille had to recover after going 2-1 behind at home to secure a point against a brave Sochaux side. Lucho Gonzalez drilled a low effort to put Marseille ahead, Martin Marvin slotted home a cool equaliser before Vicent Nogueria put Les Lionceaux's ahead. Dider Deschamp's side showed character as they restored parity through Souleymane Diawara and it remained that way until full-time.

    Montpellier HSC 3-1 Auxerre
Rene Girard's will hope an opening day victory will signal a promising campaign for Montepllier. A free-kick from Younes Belhanda put Montpellier into the lead after 35 minutes only for Alain Toure to equalise minutes before the interval with a rasping drive from outside the area. The vital goal came in the 74th minute when Geoffrey Dernis' effort beat the array of defenders; the result was confirmed late on when Olivier Giroud's strike made it 3-1 putting Montpellier at the top of Ligue 1.

    AS Nancy-Lorraine 1-1 Lille
Last years league champions were unable to begin this season with a victory as Nancy secured a point against Rudy Garcia's side. The Marcel-Picot played out a goalless first-half but the reigning champions didn't wait too long into the second half before Mathieu Debuchy fired home. Lille's jubilation was short lived as a Frank Beria own goal levelled proceedings and Lille were unable to break a resilient Nancy defence.

    Nice 1-3 Lyon
The Municipal du Ray was the venue for a blistering start to the Ligue 1 campaign with the first two goals of the season. Anthony Mounier opened the scoring for Nice after six minutes only for Lyon's Lisandro Lopez to equalise four minutes later. Lyon completed their first half turnaround when Bafetimbi Gomis tapped home before Maxime Gonalons put the result beyond doubt late in the second half.

    PSG 0-1 FC Lorient
The expectations of Paris St. Germain were short lived as the much changed side fell to 1-0 defeat at the hands of Lorient. Christian Gourcuff's side opened the scoring at the Parc des Princes with Julien Quercia supplying the finish prior to the half hour mark silencing the expectant home crowd and it remained that way until the full-time whistle.

Fabio Capello names England squad for Netherlands friendly

Manchester United and City, who clash in the Community Shield on Sunday, provide a combined 11 players, with Micah Richards and Danny Welbeck both earning call-ups

Fabio Capello has named a strong England squad to face the Netherlands in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday.

The Italian's 25-man selection features a combined 11 players from Manchester United and City, who face off in the Community Shield on Sunday, just three days prior to the clash.

Danny Welbeck has earned another call-up after featuring in the squad that faced Ghana in a 1-1 draw, while Liverpool striker Andy Carroll's fledgling international career continues.

Elsewhere, Micah Richards returns to the England fold as Glen Johnson is ruled out with an injury, and Kyle Walker, who impressed in Tottenham's friendly victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, is also in the squad.

West Ham's Scott Parker is involved despite dropping into the Championship with West Ham following last season's relegation.

    The full England squad
Goalkeepers: Robert Green, Joe Hart, David Stockdale.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Gary Cahill, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jagielka, Joleon Lescott, Micah Richards, John Terry, Kyle Walker.

Midfield: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Stewart Downing, Adam Johnson, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Scott Parker, Jack Wilshere, Ashley Young.

Forwards: Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck

    Neuer blunders on Bayern debut

Bayern Munich lost on the opening day of the Bundesliga season for the first time since 2001 as they went down 1-0 at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Monchengladbach, who beat Bayern by the same scoreline in the first game ten years ago, repeated history to spoil Jupp Heynckes' third debut in charge of the Bavarians.

It proved to be an even worse bow for Bayern's new number one Manuel Neuer as his glaring error allowed Igor de Camargo to score the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute.

Defensive failings cost Bayer Leverkusen as they opened their Bundesliga season with a 2-0 defeat to Mainz.

Goalkeeper Fabian Giefer's poor clearance allowed Sami Allagui to open the scoring before half-time and Omer Toprak's late own goal ensured there would be no way back.

both the matches were good.. Bayern could have won it if they would have converted those half chances!!
in the leverkusen-mainz match, Mainz played nicely and clearly they won..
