Manchester United's disappointing weekend ended on a high last night when Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Professional Footballers' Association player of the year. The 22-year-old topped the poll of his peers, beating off competition from his team-mates Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes as well as Steven Gerrard, Didier Drogba and Cesc Fbregas.
Ronaldo is the seventh United player to lift the award in its 33-year history, following Mark Hughes, Gary Pallister, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham and Ruud van Nistlerooy. He won the young-player award as well as the senior trophy.

He has been influential in United's challenge for a Premiership, Champions League and FA Cup treble. With 21 goals from 47 appearances he is United's top scorer this season and 14 assists make him the top flight's leading provider. "Over the season he has stood out and shone like a beacon," said the Sheffield United manager, Neil Warnock, after his side's 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford last Tuesday.
Ronaldo returned from the 2006 World Cup unsure of his United future after accusations he incited Wayne Rooney's red card in England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal and amid reports he was keen on a move to Real Madrid.

He remained at Old Trafford, however, and appeared to use the vilification he was subjected to by opposition supporters to improve as a player. In February he became the youngest player to captain Portugal and interest from the Bernabu failed to subside until, two weeks ago, he agreed a five-year deal to become United's highest paid player.

"At 22, Cristiano's got the same skill factor as Pele and Maradona," said Sir Alex Ferguson after the contract had been signed. "Cristiano has definitely got to the level of the best player in the world."

More news on ronaldo winning the double...

    * He's the first man since Aston Villa striker Andy Gray in 1977 to win both awards in the same season.

    * Ronaldo beat Chelsea striker Didier Drogba for the honor, with United teammate Paul Scholes finishing third.

"It is a special night," Ronaldo said. "It is amazing and a big honor for me to win trophies like this in the English Premier League. I am very proud.

"My colleagues have voted for me and that is fantastic because the players know the qualities of players."

"I want to keep working hard and getting better because these trophies have now given me more motivation," Ronaldo said. "At this moment, I am consistent. I am more mature now and I am playing better."

"Everything is right this season and I am really enjoying it," said Ronaldo, who signed a five-year contract April 13.

"I am still young and I am learning more every day. I have much time to learn more and improve myself. I try to improve all aspects of my football not only in training but also in games."

    * Ronaldo is the first United player to win the senior award since Ruud van Nistelrooy in 2002. Rooney has won the young player of the year award the past two seasons.

Fabregas finished runner-up in the young player category, with Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon third.

Man United also contributed eight players to the Premier League team of the year and manager Alex Ferguson was given a PFA Special Merit Award.

Ronaldo joined United in August 2003 from Sporting Lisbon after Ferguson had watched him play a friendly against the Red Devils.

"When we saw him play in a preseason friendly for Sporting against us, at halftime I knew we had to get him and I said to (then chief executive) Peter Kenyon 'we are not leaving the stadium until we get the boy'," Ferguson said.

"At this moment in time, I think he is the best player in the world and his season has been incredible."

The Premier League team of the year was: United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar; United defenders Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra; midfielders Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo and Gerrard; and Drogba and Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov as the two strikers.

Default Inter Milan, Celtic win league championships

Italian club Inter Milan and Scottish side Celtic won their respective league championships on Sunday.

Inter posted a 2-1 road victory over Siena thanks to a pair of goals from defender Marco Materazzi to retain their Italian league title.

Sunday's win, coupled with second-placed AS Roma's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Atalanta, gave Inter an unassailable 16-point lead with five games left in the campaign.

After being awarded the title by default last year following a match-fixing scandal, Inter clinched the league championship on the field Sunday for the first time in 18 years.

    It's the club's 15th league crown overall.

"Last year's title was important because of what happened before," said Inter coach Roberto Mancini. "It was a [league title] of justice".

"However, this one has been experienced through daily emotions, through difficult matches, and on the field."

Celtic, meanwhile, needed an injury-time goal from Japanese star Shunsuke Nakamura to seal a 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock and win back-to-back championships.

Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink scored in the 24th minute to give Celtic the lead, but Kilmarnock equalized when Colin Nish scored five minutes into the second half.

Nakamura saved the day, though, when he curled a free kick past Kilmarnock goalkeeper Alan Combe in injury time as Celtic claimed its 41st league title.

It is the Glasgow side's fifth title in the last seven years.

Celtic has 81 points after 34 games, 13 ahead of fellow Glasgow club Rangers with four games left.

On Saturday, Olympique Lyon won its sixth straight French league title without even playing because second-place Toulouse lost to Rennes 3-2.

The loss gave Lyon an insurmountable 17-point lead over Toulouse with five games left in the season.

Rooney had a glorious chance to make it 2-1.. he squndered it.. .. he makes simple cances look awkward.. Even carrick had a chance at the end..I wud have ben dissappointed if the penalty was denied at the other end.. but chelsea did enjoy such luck in the last 2 seasons.. so no guilt feelings at all..

But thanks to NewCastle.. But we have 4 away matches compared to Chelsea's 4 home games.. ...

I think we might struggle against Milan with no Rio, Vidic, Gary.. It wud be a miracle if we win this game.. no hopes..
