Now that it has hooked up with Nokia Corp. phones, Microsoft Corp. hopes to connect its phone software to the Xbox this year too. It’s also planning other improvements that include a faster Web browser and quicker switching between phone applications.
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced the upgrades Monday in a keynote speech at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain. On Friday, Nokia Corp. said it would ditch its smart-phone software in favour of using Windows Phone 7, which launched late last year.
Microsoft showed a video of three people using an Xbox game console with a Kinect camera. One of them, standing in front of the camera, “dodged” balls that appeared on the TV screen, sent by the two other players from their Windows phones.
In another upgrade, Microsoft plans to introduce a form of “multitasking” for third-party applications. To switch quickly between apps, the user can hold down the “back” button, which reveals a list of recently-used applications, displayed like a row of “cards” on the screen. It’s a design reminiscent of Palm Inc.’s webOS software, which attracted few customers despite receiving favourable reviews when it was released in 2009. Hewlett-Packard Co. bought Palm last year and plans to use the software in a range of products, including tablets and PCs.
Microsoft also plans to upgrade its browser to make it more responsive. Microsoft runs a version of its Internet Explorer that lags behind smart-phone browsers when it comes to speed.
Windows phones will get their first, previously announced software update in March. It will add a cut-and-paste feature. The more wide-ranging updates revealed Monday will come later in the year.
Microsoft is playing catch-up in the phone market, with sales far behind those of Apple Inc.’s iPhone and phones based on Google Inc.’s Android software. Microsoft is paying billions for Nokia’s support, and Nokia’s CEO says the smart-phone market will now be more of “three-horse race.”

After months of rumours, “Facebook phones” offering instant posting to the popular social networking site were unveiled this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
None of these new mobile phones has an official Facebook logo on the back. But even a casual test shows that the controls revolve around status updates, pokes, likes and other Facebook features.
The site’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has a vision of the entire globe becoming a network of Facebook friends. And these new mobile phones lead that way. It is already estimated that one-third of Facebook’s 600 million members post or read friends’ updates on phones.
Apple’s iPhone and Android phones have had Facebook apps for ages.
What is different on the new devices is the phone does not feel like a tool that helps you connect to Facebook — it seems to be a part of Facebook already.
On “Facebook phones” from HTC of Taiwan, for instance, when the user takes a photograph the Facebook button blinks. It is urging the user to post that picture to the website.
When the cellphone plays a song that the user enjoys, it is possible to tag it with an instant “like” and share that with friends. If a Facebook friend phones, their profile comes up on the screen.
HTC calls the variant with a keyboard the ChaCha and the one with a touchscreen the Salsa.
Zuckerberg had denied in recent months that he was planning a Facebook phone. In a sense that has proved true — it’s not one phone, it’s dozens.
On a video conference call to Mobile World, he said even more phones with profound Facebook integration are on the way.
Last week a little-known maker, INQ, launched two phones that are built around Facebook, offering direct access to the user’s Wall.
Postings from friends constantly stream into the INQ phones’ news page and invitations and other events go automatically into its calendar. Like the HTC products, the INQ devices run on Android.
A smartcard company, Gemalto, has brought a novel approach to Barcelona — integrating some of Facebook’s more basic functions into the SIM card instead of the phone itself. The advantage is that the user can then interact with Facebook using practically any mobile phone.
This can be major money saver, since the user does not have to buy a costly smartphone or subscribe to an expensive data pricing option to send and see status updates, give and receive pokes and invitations, all of which run as texts.
The short message service (SMS) technology does not handle photographs and videos, but this mode of Facebooking could have enormous appeal for budget-minded users. Gemalto’s Facebook for SIM service will not be free, but financed by subscriptions.

Skype today announced a Mobile Partner Program for operators in markets with low 3G broadband penetration. The program aims to bring the Skype experience to a broad range of mobile users and will enable carriers to differentiate their offerings in a competitive market environment. This program follows the successful operator partnerships that Skype has already launched with Verizon, KDDI and Hutchison 3.

Operators taking part in this program will be able to offer their customers a fast, easy Skype experience that runs on a range of OS platforms covering more than 100 different smartphone and feature phone handsets. Through Skype their customers will have the ability to make free calls and send instant messages to other Skype users. In addition, their customers can take advantage of Skype’s low rates to make affordable calls to mobile phones and landlines virtually anywhere in the world.

“Wipro will be managing both end-to-end services of both managing the fixed line network as well as understanding our customers, right from provisioning line network as they come out on fixed line services and then monitoring their performances as well ground support, etc,” Mr. Chopra said.
