Thiruvananthapuram: As the row over the Mullaperiyar dam intensified, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday sought Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention asking him to advise Kerala government not to whip up fear among its people for political mileage.
On Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said a new dam has to be built - pointing to cracks in the structure after nearly 22 minor tremors. Chandy made another demand later - that the water level in the dam be reduced 120 feet, as a temporary solution.
"We are asking the Central government to intervene and tell the Tamil Nadu government to do it. We also request the SC empowered committee to look into it. In context of the frequent tremors it is an immediate necessity," Water Resources Minister PJ Joseph said.
She also asked Kerala to abide by the 2006 Supreme Court verdict on water sharing.
The issue is so emotive that even the film 'Dam 999', based on the dispute has met with severe protests. The question is can there be an objective assessment of the dam's safety in the midst of high pitched political rhetoric.
The controversy over the movie 'Dam 999' and the safety concerns raised by Kerala government makes it clear that both the southern states are set to lock horns once again. The big question is will the Centre's intervention bring forth a temporary resolution?
