Bhaskar The Rascal Review
The posters conveyed something of a family drama while the title of the movie conveyed a fun movie with an action backdrop. Now where does Baskar The Raskal fall if we draw a line. I would say it is a mix of both that has elements to satisfy the family audiences and at the same time fans of Mammootty will also like it as they too have something in it to cheer about.
The storyline focus on the title protagonist Bhaskar, a wealthy businessman and his son. Bhaskar though respected in the society has another shade to his character; one that of a thug who reacts instantly if anyone oppose him. Enter Hima and her daughter that thickens the plot. Bhaskar has lost his wife and Hima her husband. The first half mainly concentrate on the efforts of the kids to unite their parents. The second half turns things making the film get a serious shade.
Siddhique who is returning back after a disastrous and disappointing movie gets it somewhat spot on this time to an extent understanding the pulse of the audience. But to be honest, this is not the regular pattern of film that we have seen from him and not close to his best. Comedy (old style from his own previous flicks), fun, action and drama is there but in limited dose making Bhaskar a watchable film without much expectations. Comedy is okay but everything seems to be recycled ones from past movies of Director.
The film has a very good flow right from the beginning till the half way stage. From a fun filled and engaging first half, the movie gets a serious tone in the post intermission session. The second half falls below if we compare with the pre interval portion and the climax too was a hard and unmatched one for this type of movie.
On screen, Mammootty as expected did his part well and he infused life into the film. Among the positives in the movie, it is the actor’s screen presence as the title protagonist right from the first scene. Nayanthara returning to Mollywood after a long layoff and paired with Mammootty after Raapakal made a good combination as the lead pair. In terms of acting too, she was upto the task doing justice to the character entrusted to her. The two child artistes Anekha and Sanoop, who play a major part in the film were another notable actors who could score maximum.
Comedy department was handled by Harisree Asokan, Kalabhavan Shajon and Saju Navodaya. Among the trio, it was Saju who outshone his more experienced colleagues. Janardhanan as Bhaskar’s father supported and made sure his part looked okay on screen. Bollywood actor Chakravarthy made sure he did justice to his billing as an actor of talent.
The movie appealed well visually, thanks to good cinematography. Edits were nice. Background score and music is by Deepak Dev and they were good. I Love You Mummy song that is getting allegation that it has been ripped off from an Arabic Album was nice to hear and the visuals of the song had a feel good factor to it.
Overall I found it a watchable movie without much freshness. Eventhough the second half and climax was way out of the box when we look at how the story was unfolding till the half way mark, leaving all expectations it is an okay movie. My rating for Siddhique’s Bhaskar The Raskal is three out of five.
Rating – 4 / 5
