Playing Charlie delighted Dulquer: Martin
The Chennai floods have got the team behind the movie Charlie in a fix! The movie's sound department has been based out of Chennai and the floods have brought work to an abrupt halt.
Its director Martin Prakkat says, "We have been stuck for a while. We are now trying to shift the team and kit to Mumbai or Kochi. The rain situation in Chennai is uncertain so we don't want to take any risks. The movie has to hit the theatres this month."
Charlie has Dulquer Salmaan as the eponymous hero and Parvathy playing the female lead. "It's a simple love story. There's no suspense. Giving away any more would reveal the entire story. I don't want to pin it to a specific genre," he explains.
Martin tells us that it was the actor who had encouraged him to take up Charlie as his third directorial after Best Actor and ABCD. "I had initially approached Dulquer with another subject. After listening to the story, he told me 'we could do that story anytime. Why don't we choose another subject?' That's how we landed on Charlie. That's the kind of bond we share. Dulquer doesn't take such liberties with anyone else. He even offered to co-produce Charlie."
On working with Dulquer again after ABCD, the filmmaker says,"He has not changed but our friendship has evolved over the years.We argue on the sets, have our fun moments — ultimately it all helps to bring out the best film we can."
How different would Charlie be compared to their previous collaboration? "Poles apart," replies Martin. "If ABCD had Dulquer playing a character based on his real life experiences, Charlie takes him through an untrodden path. That's what made it challenging for him and also made him the happiest! It's a role he has never done before. Also, my approach towards the film has been different."
