Charlie narrates a simple story sprinkled with romance and laughter, says director Martin Prakkat.
Martin Prakkat reiterates that there is nothing special about Charlie other than that it is a musical love story. But the movie starring Dulquer Salmaan in the lead has been one of the most awaited movies of the year. Dulquer’s Bohemian looks and his dream pairing with Parvathy, once again, were reasons enough for fans to stay hooked. The trailer that was released early this week is the talk of tinsel town. As the movie reaches theatres, Martin is a bundle of nerves, especially having tackled a lot of issues prior to the release.
The deluge in Chennai had thrown the post production work of Charlie out of gear. The sound designing work was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram and a few other technical aspects were completed in Kochi and Mumbai. “Everything had to be rearranged and we were doubtful about releasing it on time,” says Martin.
Meanwhile he admits he is tired of the hype surrounding the movie. Expectations are high and there were rumours that it has a guest appearance by a superstar. Martin denies it over and over again. “I was aghast by the kind of things people were posting about Charlie on social media. It is a simple story about two people, Charlie (Dulquer) and Tessa (Parvathy). You can say that it is about what happens before two people fall in love. Also Charlie is no drug addict as many might have assumed because of the title of the film and it is not a story about any drug cartel! It is not a suspense thriller,” says Martin.
He stresses that Dulquer and Parvathy have equal importance in the movie. “Charlie is a happy guy who wants to make all others happy and Tessa works as a graphic artiste in Bengaluru,” Martin says.
Having directed Dulquer in ABCD, Martin is pleased by his evolution as an actor. “He was pretty new inABCD. He is one actor who wants to improve himself. Our friendship has also grown over the years. He has already started talking about the next project we are planning to do,” Martin says.
As for Tessa, he was planning to cast a new face. But as the character evolved, he wanted an experienced actress to play the role. “I had already narrated the story to Parvathy and it was at the last minute that I asked her whether she could play the role,” says Martin, who made an impressive debut with Best Actor and followed it up with yet another hit in ABCD.
With two successful films to his credit, Martin says that he is always under pressure. “I don’t consider myself a great filmmaker. The job isn’t easy. In fact I read somewhere that being a director is the third most difficult thing in the world!” he chuckles. This time he is handling production as well for Finding Cinema with actor Joju George and Shebin Backer as co-producers.
Like his previous films Martin has associated with the writing department of Charlie as well. He had co-written the story of Best Actor and he was one of the scriptwriters of ABCD. He has co-written the script of Charlie with Unni R., who has written the story of the movie. “I enjoy the process of writing because that helps me as a director. When you write the movie, the shots automatically come to your mind. So once you start shooting, you are pretty sure about the scenes. In my case, I never had to look at the script because I knew all the dialogues by heart,” he adds.
He praises the music scored by Gopi Sunder. “He wanted a new soundscape for the movie and it has songs that grow on you,” Martin says. Ace cinematographer Jomon T. John has cranked the camera.
Aparna Gopinath, Nedumudi Venu, Chemban Vinod and Soubin Shahir are also in the cast.
So can we expect a cameo, a la Nee-Na, in which he played a doctor? “No! I won’t take that risk again. Actually Lal Jose took revenge on me for making him act in Best Actor,” Martin signs off.
