2.5 / 5 stars
Suhara and Majeed are more a part of the thoughts of Malayalees than just a couple of characters, who draw the attention from the lovers of legendary writer Vaikom Mohammed Basheer. And, director Pramod Payyannur has drawn out those characters into the big screen, even though knows the difficulty of portraying the whole story with perfection.
The eternal love story of Majeed (Mammootty) and Suhara (Isha Talwar) goes through many difficulties and scarification even amidst a lot of personal loses. Majeed went onto Kolkata in order to fulfill his dreams, but met with much odd conditions there. People like Ameen Sahib (Sasikumar) Selvi (Seema Biswas) and Shabnam (Tanushree Ghosh) did make a lot of difference in the life of Majeed there. How he will cope with the difficult times for his love….?
Somewhere down the lane, Balyakalaskhi lies in the mind of each Malayalees and that is what happened with, when the makers have came up with a cinematic version. It is not the way, we read out the book that movie has presented the whole thing. Having bulk of experience in the drama scenario seems to have made the job of director more dramatic, which was visible in the movie without much introspection. Movie started off the whole settings up by framing out the lust less relationship taking place between Majeed and Suhara from their childhood days. Soon enough, you are introduced a whole of problems being faced by Majeed later in his life.
What remained as the strongest connecting point between all the coming scenes in ‘Balyakalasakhi’ is the everlasting love which Majeed and Suhara keep in their mind. But, another striking point is that one is not expected to understand the kind of craziness both have in their mind for each other, if he hasn’t gone through the novel; as there were situations aplenty which might not have gone well with a rather small – scaled portrayal of the romantic sequences between Majeed and Suhara. Also, the hurry buried manner, with which they ended up the movie too invites quite some thirsty eyes demanding more.
Performance: The caliber of Mammootty as an actress is strikingly visible in situations where he essayed the role of Majeed’s father and his majestic expressions. At the same time, as the son longing for love too was safe in the hands of the towering personality of Mammootty. However, there weren’t much to claim for romantic sequences between Majeed and Suhara in the movie, when they are grown up. This has quite satisfied the questions of many who raised their eyebrows over the combination between Mammootty and Isha Talwar. Isha was beautiful and she acted much better than her earlier movies, but wasn’t something that is enticing enough.
Seema Bishwas, Sasikumar too have essayed their roles with perfection, so is Thanushree Ghosh. The rest of the cast includes personalities such as KPAC Lalitha, Mamukkoya, the performance of whom, doesn’t need explanations.
Technical aspects: Hari Nair has equally captured the beauty of Kerala as well as the streets of Calcutta. It grabbed the centre of action many at a time, when he copied the sublime royal looking streets of Calcutta.
But, editing didn’t raised to the occasion and carried many problems in the form of lacking a whole neatness. There were many occasions, when we didn’t quite get the continuity. Art designing too was of good in nature and mirrored the actual times of Majeed and Suhara.
Music: Along with the hummable music of late Raghavan Master and Shahabaz Aman, what looked more striking is the background music provided by Bijpal. He has filled the right kind of atmosphere whenever there were some itchy feelings in the movie. To an extent, it was a musical experience.
Screenplay: Having the big task of portraying the story of Majeed and Suhara without much difference from the novel itself is a huge task. However, even amidst some problems in terms of screenplay, the director has tried to bring the emotional state of the centre characters to mind.
But, once again those who haven’t had the experience of Balyakalasahi – The novel might not have enjoyed this work to those who had it.
Direction: Pramod Payyannur’s direction wasn’t out from the dramatic elements and somewhere it looked not necessary for the movie. But, having portrayed the endearing story in the first half, made him eligible for overcoming the lack of interest indulged in the latter half.
Verdict: Not in the level of Novel.
Rating: 2.5.
