Balyakalasakhi - a watchable adaptation of the book
It is a Herculean task to bring a popular novel to life on the silver screen. At first, I wondered how one could recreate the magic of Beypore Sultan, Vaikom Mohammed Basheer. I always felt it would be difficult to showcase the simple lives of Suhara and Majeed.
Debutant director Pramod Payyannur has made a brave attempt by adding colour to lives of the characters of Basheer's Balyakalasakhi. He has brought life to those characters whom we have held close to our hearts since childhood. Although the movie is an independent adaptation of the novel, one is bound to compare Basheer's literary work with the movie. I prefer the book over the movie. Not because I love representations of visuals less, but I love the written word more!
The movie does offer the audience a variety of experiences. For some it's a journey that explores their past, for others it takes them back to those moments of their lives they had cherished most and to some others it's a new world. The movie is also set in the pre-independence era, where life and love were destructed by British Raj and social discrimination.
The story of Majeed (Mammootty) and Suhara (Isha Talwar) blossomed at a time when love was pure and innocent. Life, in those days, was simple but hard. The director has recreated the pre-independence era successfully. Though there was less to learn about the life and culture that prevailed during that period in Kerala, the movie touches upon certain aspects of how our forefathers lived in society.
Majeed arrives in Kolkata in search of a job. The movie moves back and forth between Kolkata and Thalayoalaparambu near Vaikkom. Majeed loses all his money on the night he arrives in Kolkata. But there he meets Selvi (Seema Biswas), who helps him to get a job. Selvi introduces him to Ameen Sahib (Sasikumar). Ameen Sahib, is a Malayalee freedom fighter, author and orator. Ameen Sahib employees Majeed in his press, where books on his teachings about freedom and India are printed. Majeed works as a salesman and distributor of books.
He then meets Shabnam (Thanusree Ghosh), daughter of Ameen Sahib, and Praful (Preim Sheikh), a rebel and a writer. Even though he lives in the midst of an oppressed and divided society, he thinks of his love, Suhara, all the time. All he wished for was a peaceful life with her. But life was rather unfair, and he was unable to fulfill his dreams. The rest of the story deals with the flashback of the love story between Majeed and Suhra. It showcases how their love blossoms and where life takes them.
To me, the depiction of the childhood days of Majeed and Suhara was the best part of the movie. Pramod has beautifully transformed the two pairs, from little Majeed and Suhara to the two adults we see on screen. Without losing the warmth of serene and pure emotion, one could say that the kids have lived the lives of the duo. The recreation of the sequence depicting the famous philosophy of Basheer - Majeed’s answer to his teacher’s question that one and one make a slightly bigger one - was funny.
The senior crew, led by Mammootty, has also done a brilliant job in making the movie a fine tribute to Basheer. Mammootty, who plays a double role, excels as Majeed’s father too and depicts a whole range of emotions. The role of Majeed is undoubtedly the role that has challenged his acting skills and it brings out the best in him in recent times. Isha as Suhara, has drawn a lot of criticism in the social media. Her performance seemed acceptable as she had refrained from overacting. Sasikumar, Seema Biswas and Preim Sheikh were also commendable.
Music by the legendary Raghavan Master and Shahabaz Aman is a treat. All songs, especially ‘Thamarapponkavanathil’ and ‘Kalam Parakkanu’ will be lingering in the hearts of music lovers for a long time. It was refreshing to listen to V T Murali's voice for the song 'Kalam Parakkanu.' I would say the song struck the nostalgic chords of my most cherished memories.
As far as the cinematic experience of the movie is concerned, it has failed to impress the audience. The film seems to lose its charm after first half. Not to mention the rather odd editing. You often feel disturbed by the unexpected transitions from one sequence to another.
This is a one-time watch for those who have read the book. For others, I would say experience Basheer's version before watching it on the silver screen.
