Supreme Court: Official Covid toll stats ‘not true’, so don’t deny ex gratia


“Official statistics are not true on death figures and it cannot be said fraudulent claims are being made (by families of Covid victims),” a bench of Justices M R Shah and B V Nagarathna said, taking note of rejection of large number of claims by many state governments.
As per the latest figures, the number of claims for Covid compensation received so far in Gujarat now stands at 1,02,230 against the official toll of 10,094. The state has so far approved 87,045 claims and disbursed compensation amount to 82,605 families, while rejecting 8994 applications. Telangana rejected 2752 claims out of total 31,053 applications.
In Andhra Pradesh, total claims received so far is 42924 against the official toll of 14527 and the government accepted 37571 claims while rejecting 4297 applications. In Uttar Pradesh, 37007 applications were received against the official death figures of 23073 and the state accepted 29622 claims and rejected 1527.
